Finding My Old Posts

Some of you may remember that I had Bright Rock Media up and running in 2013-2014. I had created hundreds of posts, some of which I’m really attached to. Now that I’m restarting the site with a new direction and new focus, I wanted to go get some of those posts back.

This presented a huge problem! My old wordpress was hosted on a local server running on an old Mac I had in my living room. The server was no longer functional (it takes a lot of little tweaks to get a home server working, like installing mysql software, having DNS point to it, getting security certificates, etc). As a result, I couldn’t login to wordpress with it and use their export function. And so, I had all the files for the old wordpress but, unfortunately, you can’t just dump the contents folder onto a new computer and find the posts in there.

Running a home server created a lot of server stability issues, so I decided to get professional hosting this time. In order to get my old posts — and I’m not quite there yet, I’ll explain why — I had to download the sql database from the old server, which contains all the posts… in a massive, unformatted jumble of code.

This whole process — dragging out my old mac, getting it set up, learning the website won’t function locally anymore, copying over my files, finding out I need to dump the sql database, figuring out how to do that, getting my hands on that — it all took a total of about 3 hours.

So I will go through this jumble and find some of the posts from the old site that I really want to put back up here, but it’ll take time and I’m going to do it in batches. In the meantime, I’m also working on the theme for the site! It’s still very much a work in progress but I’m curious what you guys think about the current look. Leave a comment below!
