Game Review: Shadowrun Dragonfall

There are only two things that feel like a step back with the Director’s Cut. One, the UI is changed from something kind of unique to your standard-fare WoW style skillbar, which I thought was a bit of a questionable application of resources, though it’s well executed. Unfortunately there aren’t enough slots on your skillbar for the amount of skills you can get! So if you get too many skills, some of your skills won’t be accessible because there’s no option to expand the skillbar or anything. Hopefully they’ll get that fixed — a lot of people on their forums pointed it out. The other thing that feels like a step back is the loss of Dead Man’s Switch, the original Shadowrun Returns campaign — sure, the way it turned out, Dragonfall was definitely the meat of Shadowrun Returns, but was presented as dessert, and the main thing they’re doing by releasing Dragonfall as a standalone title is trying to correct that, but Dead Man’s Switch is still a great little campaign — I wish it got included in their overhaul as a ‘dessert’, even if they didn’t change the campaign itself.

10) Your story choices matter.

Or at least they feel like they matter. You make a lot of highly impactful one-off choices: let the leader of the cult go, or kill him (receiving different rewards); resolve your issues with a neighboring gang via diplomacy or violence; give the experimental Robo-Cop Jason Bourne thing to this group, that group, or return its agency. These are all real examples of the choices in the game, not to mention the ending choices (there are about 5 different endings). Unlike most games with choices like this, these are difficult choices sometimes. There\’s rarely a clear-cut ‘best’ choice. It’s great for two reasons — first, you’ll probably replay to see what happens if you go the other way, and two, agonizing over what ending you want, for example, is a very satisfying gameplay experience.
