Movie Review: American Made

Enter the CIA, prepared to give Barry his own top of the line plane and his own company. Unfortunately, after the excitement wears off, he’s left with a job that doesn’t give him enough money to support his kids.

Schafer, the CIA agent, embodies the endless resources and uncaring baffoonery of the US government

Barry, at the core of his character, evolves into becoming a professional smuggler — a job at which he is very, very successful. Quickly becoming known not just by the CIA, but by the insurgent militias in central America, as a great pilot and smuggler, he’s recruited to do all sorts of tasks for the American government and the militia groups, smuggling guns, drugs and money.

Pablo Escobar & co, seen here before they start laughing and betting on whether Barry will crash his plane

The movie does a fantastic job of tapping into the period of the film, which is the late 70s and early to mid 80s. The world they created vibrant and true to the time, and it was created not just through set and costume design, but also by the style in which the movie was filmed, which was full of nostalgic throwbacks to 80s filmmaking.

The characters are all very interesting. Not just Barry himself, the members of the Medellin Cartel, his family members, Schafer, his CIA contact, and his small fleet of fellow smugglers. The way the whole thing is intertwined with historical events gives the film a grounding that, when juxtaposed with Barry’s unbelievable story, really gives meat to the idea that sometimes non-fiction is more unbelievable than fiction.
