An Alternative Theory on Astrology

Yep, it’s a piece about astrology.  I can feel your eyes rolling right now.  Don’t worry, we’ll all get through this.

Right off the bat, let’s get this out of the way. This isn’t about horoscopes. Whether there’s any truth or not to the phases of the planets and their ability to accurately predict what’s going to happen to you on a daily basis, the fact of the matter is that the people who write horoscopes are just random unemployed people struggling to put out a daily piece of writing. They’re not psychic and they have no profound ability to predict with any reasonable accuracy what’s going to happen to you today, whether Mercury is in retrograde or not.

However, with regard to the zodiac predicting personality types based on your sign, in my life I feel there’s too much anecdotal evidence in its favor to deny. I was always a skeptic, until a couple of things happened. Around 2014 I was dating a Libra, and as a lark I looked up the relationship compatibility between a Libra and a Virgo (my sign). Long story short, not good. In fact, it’s bad. What I found to be eerie, though, is when I looked back on the rocky relationship after it ended, everything it said about the compatibility of that pair was prophetically accurate. Since then, I looked a little more into it. I looked at my friend’s list on Facebook, almost every person I’ve naturally accrued is of a sign that’s supposedly compatible with Virgo, friendship-wise. Virgos are supposed to get along with Taurus, Capricorn, Scorpio, Cancer and other Virgos. Without trying or ever thinking about zodiacs at all, my friends are over half Tauruses, and the rest are of these other signs, although I do have some good friends who are Geminis.

After discovering those things, I started paying attention to signs when it came to relationships. The compatibilities applied to my romantic relationships as well. My longest lasting relationships (years+) were both with Scorpios, a sign Virgos are supposed to be maximally compatible with. My relationships with Aquarians and Libras were fraught and played out exactly like the compatibility descriptions described. I’ve dated Taurus, another good Virgo match, and got along famously, but the challenges in that relationship also fit nicely into the compatibility descriptions available. Haven’t dated a Cancer or Capricorn yet, though those are supposed to be good matches.

So, is it just a coincidence? I’ve thought about it, but how could it be that, without trying, all of my long-term relationships fit the pattern? That’s a lot of coincidences. And, it couldn’t possibly be phases of the moon and the alignment of the planets, right? Just intuitively, that seems to impossibly silly. So here’s my alternative theory to explain what’s going on here: seasonal affective disorder or, more, even, very simply the vibe that pervades each season.

What if, rather than phases of the moon, people born during similar times in the year develop some similar personality traits due to the mood and feng shui of their surrounding during their formative infancy phase? I.e., if you’re born around Christmas or New Years, you’re a Capricorn. What if the experience of being born during the Christmas season affects your long-term personality? But, you say, worldwide not everyone celebrates the same holidays. Of course not, but if you’re in a country that doesn’t celebrate Christmas, people born around the same time will still be born into a similar societal mood. Widespread seasonal societal moods are scientifically proven by the existence of Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Ultimately, though… what causes Seasonal Affective Disorder? According to science, it’s the changes in atmosphere, sunlight levels, weather and temperature. To me, it seems possible that the anecdotal proof I’ve seen, which is compelling to me as a reasonably intelligence person, of zodiac sign impacting personality could be explained by the external stimuli of the environment that changes with the seasons.

What do you think? Am I crazy?
