Review: Undone

Undone is another one of those Amazon Prime Originals. I really enjoyed this one. I’ve always been a fan of psychological/philosophical shows like Slacker and A Scanner Darkly, and this fits right in, rotoscoping and all.

The main character is Rosa Salazar, who I guess also played Alita in Alita Battle Angel (although she looks almost nothing like Alita — those CGI eyes made a huge difference), and then Bob Odenkirk plays Rosa’s dad.

Basically, the plot is that Rosa (I don’t remember the character’s name, I watched it a few months ago) gets into a car crash and becomes detached from time. She starts seeing visions of her dead father, and it’s unclear if she’s becoming schizophrenic or if she actually has time control powers.

The more high-level plot is that Rosa’s dad died under mysterious circumstances and she’s going to use her newly activated time powers to get to the bottom of it.

To answer the question the show seems to ask its audience throughout, I think Rosa’s experience is real. After all — what is reality at all but what you perceive?

Really, though, the show is mostly about relationships. Rosa’s relationship with her sister, her boyfriend, her father, and her own sense of identity and self-actualization.

I quite enjoyed this show. I really liked the main character and found her to be relatable. I love that rotoscoped art style. It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. I would watch a season 2 but I suspect a second season wouldn’t be as good, because the first season feels like a self-contained story.
