Oh Wonder

Oh Wonder, an Aggressively Wholesome Band

Usually, I like hard rock that’s weird and a little off the beaten path, like Bring Me the Horizon, Billy Talent, Coheed and Cambria, Grimes. However, one band I’m really vibing on these days is Oh Wonder.

It’s a man and wife duo (or not, I don’t research these articles). If not, it seems like a couple fronting the band. Oh Wonder’s music is emotional, often uplifting and comes across as sincere. It’s a little bit in the same category for me as Of Monsters and Men, or a happier Radical Face or Ben Howard.

The music videos are great, especially the art direction, which is always very colorful, and the choreography. The Hallelujah video is a one-take dance that’s hypnotic to watch. Very impressive.

My favorite is, by far, Hallelujah:

Another one of my favorites is Technicolour Beat:

Oh Wonder is a band that really feels connected to what it means to be a human being. When I listen to it, it sounds like it’s creating a connective thread between me and what it all means. I thought it was a Christian band when I first heard it and, honestly, it may be.

It has a gospel vibe, but it’s modern, it’s uplifting, it’s not overtly religious. Who knows, who cares. If they are, that’s cool, if not, that’s cool too. Each song bottles this emotion that is a sort of combination of hope and despair, with hope winning the battle. It’s an alluring combination that seems hard to hit and they nail it.

Definitely a great band. Catchy, every song I’ve heard from them is solid, has a unique sound and style, aggressively wholesome to an edgy degree. Their execution is superb; in general, as a band, they’re very polished and their songwriting is continually on point. Oh Wonder is a cornerstone of 2019 counter-culture.
