S Tier – Best Pillars of Eternity 2 Companions
Maia is universally regarded as the best of all the Pillars of Eternity 2 companions. Unlike every other companion (except arguably Tekehu), she’s better than a player character you could min-max for the exact same role.
Her stats are adequately min-maxed for her role as a gunner (17 PER, 15 DEX, 14 MIG), her pet (a hawk) is unique to her and better than any pet a player has access to, and she just wrecks in terms of damage dealing.
All she needs in order to totally take over the game is a gun called The Red Hand, which shoots twice and gives +20% damage. You can obtain The Red Hand relatively early. She has innate +20% range and a hefty interrupt chance. Unless you’re using a Ranger character yourself, Maia is going to be your best option for a DPS workhorse.
Mirke, herself, is not really that special. It’s more the fact that the monk class is exceedingly broken and thematically she makes great use of the Pukestabber / Marux Amanth dagger combo.
If you want to go that route, you should probably make her a Shadowdancer (Monk/Rogue) so she can have access to the Marux Amanth. Her stats aren’t great, though she does have 16 CON, but your only other option for a Monk is Xoti and, honestly, broken as monks are, Xoti is more well-suited to using her unique items and abilities. Mirke is a much better in-your-face killing machine.
Definitely one of the best Pillars of Eternity 2 companions.
A Tier – Best Pillars of Eternity 2 Companions
The other character who is better than a PC you could make to fill the same role. Because Tekehu gets a special class (Watershaper), as well as great stat placement (17 INT), he’s about as well as you can do for a support mage in this game.
What makes Watershaper so great? Basically it gives up most of the most useless spells in the Druid tree in order to enhance almost all of the most useful ones by making them have no friendly fire. So you can use all those zany AoE ice spells and drop them right on your own party. He also gets a better-than-normal Chanter subclass, but you’d be gimping him if you go that route. Best as a pure druid.
A lot of people think Eder is kind of boring/bland because he’s just a fighter, but let’s be real: fighters wreck in this game, and you need one. He has great stats for a Fighter (16 MIG, 16 CON), and if you make him a dual-wielding swashbuckler he’ll have even more passive damage bonuses to stack up. In the game I used Eder, he tore through most enemies like tissue paper.
There’s really not much to say about him. Like the general consensus says, he’s a bit bland. Mostly just stick the best equipment you have on him, build him toward passive bonuses and let him go to town. That’s all it takes to make him one of the best Pillars of Eternity 2 companions.
B Tier – Best Pillars of Eternity 2 Companions
Pallegina is the best support tank in the game. Her Herald class (Paladin/Chanter) is a fantastic class combo; She’ll be buffing your whole squad with all sorts of auras and chanting bonuses.
Hard to beat her in terms of utility for a frontliner, and her survivability is immense. She comes with a lot of great tools, including a few get out of jail free cards that can turn bad situations around (revive skills, major heals, etc). Definitely a companion to consider, and one of the best Pillars of Eternity 2 companions available.
Xoti gets a lot of love and a lot of hate. None of it matters. She could have zero abilities and 1 health and still probably end up around this point on the list because of one reason: when you complete her personal quest, if you take the ‘dark’ path, her lantern upgrades to get the Threshing Aura enchant, which, at max religion, gives a +10% damage bonus to your whole team.
Beyond that, she gets the monk class which is a great class, but she’s not a very good one. It’d be a shame not to dual class her to Monk/Priest since she gets unique abilities in each class.
Without Threshing Aura, Xoti would be terrible. But, because she does get it, she gets to be ranked among the best Pillars of Eternity 2 companions for that reason alone.
If you’re not making a wizard yourself, you may want to pick up Aloth. Wizard is indispensable as a class, and some of the available spells are just mindblowingly OP because of the way grimoires work. There are a few unique spellbooks you can find that make Wizards very versatile in terms of what you can accomplish with them, and Aloth, himself, is pretty versatile in terms of his class combos.
You can either make him a fullblown Wizard, slap on Ninagauth’s Teachings and spam OP paralyzing ice fireballs at everything, or make him a Wizard/Fighter with Llengrath’s Martial Masteries and become a shockingly good melee fighter.
He’s in B Tier, but he’s still very strong and earns his place among the best Pillars of Eternity 2 companions.
C Tier – Best Pillars of Eternity 2 Companions
People seem to really like him. He’s just okay. Same deal as Eder — he’s a frontliner who relies mostly on passive bonuses and equipment, except he’s a Barbarian (or Chanter) instead of a Fighter.
Personality I think he’s a pretty bland character and his stat spread is not as good as Eder’s (10 INT on a Barbarian is… suboptimal), but like I said in Eder’s bit, it’s good to have a character who can take hits and get in the thick of things. Konstanten is probably the second-best candidate for that role.
Great damage potential, but a bit of a glass cannon. Your only option for a cipher (besides Serafen — we’ll get to that), but also can come as a rogue or dual class. No matter what you pick with her, you’ll get the same experience: high damage output, needs a lot of attention to not die.
In a game like PoE2, which is so full of meaningless trash fights, a fire-and-forget character like Eder is a lot more useful, in my opinion. Ydwin needs a lot of babysitting and micromanagement.
D Tier – Best Pillars of Eternity 2 Companions
Basically a discount Eder. He’d be higher than Konstanten if not for his horrifically bad stats (11 MIG, 10 CON). He has cool class options (Fighter/Barbarian), an interesting story/quest and a nice portrait, so I want to rank him higher but, whew, those stats are… well, they’re bad. There’s not much more to say about it. They’re very bad, especially the CON.
You can sort of slot him into the same party role as Eder/Konstanten and he’ll perform alright. I guess it’s nice to have options. Not topping the list of Pillars of Eternity 2 companions, for sure.
By the time you get him, you almost assuredly have your full party set in stone, but if not he makes a decent support character. You most likely want to take him as his dual class, Celebrant (Priest/Chanter), and make him a full-on support character, but a full-on support character is not something that is particularly game-changing in this game.
Vatnir’s forgettable and that definitely puts him toward the bottom of the best Pillars of Eternity 2 companions list. Forgettable, not great, but not unusable.
F Tier – Pillars of Eternity 2 Companions
This one’s a real shame, because Serafen is a very likable character in the story, looks cool, is a pirate in a pirate-themed game, and has cool class options, but his unique Cipher subclass makes him unusable. The Wild Mind subclass gives all his spells a chance to backfire and inflict a variety of horrible effects on your party, and those backfires happen constantly.
If not for this insurmountable drawback, he’d be a lot higher on this list, probably in the upper tier with his above average stat placement and interesting class combo but, yeah, no. Unusable. You could use him as a straight barbarian but, eh. His stats are placed to make him a ranged unit.
Another cool character made useless by her horrible drawbacks, Fassina has the Conjurer mage subclass. Which is a dirty, dirty prank by the developers. As a result, she has a useless bonus to conjuring spells (+1 power level for spells that are not affected by power level), and in exchange, she loses almost every single offensive spell in the game.
She has no class options without Conjurer in them — you could make her a Conjurer/Chanter (a weird combo lacking in any synergy) or a Conjurer/Druid (why would you ever do this when you have Tekehu?). Her stats are… alright. If they’d just given her a different Wizard subclass and different class combos, she could have made it to at least the middle of this list on the strength of the Wizard class alone.
Easily the worst of the Pillars of Eternity 2 companions.
