Stat Growths – Final Fantasy Tactics White Mage

(Lower is better)
HP: 10 MP: 10 SPD: 100 PA: 50 MA: 50

Oddly enough, White Mage has decent HP and MP growth as well as an above average speed modifier (110%). That makes White Mage the fastest of the mages. Unfortunately, it’s still not a class you’re going to want to level in. If you’re focusing on HP and physical attributes, you’ll want to go with Knight or Ninja; if you’re going to with magical classes, Summoner grants the best MP growth.

Moveset: White Magick – Final Fantasy Tactics White Mage

Ability NameJP Cost

As far as utility goes, White Mage actually gets a very nice moveset. It has all sorts of tools: AoE healing, revives, status recovery, buffs, even a highly damaging spell (Holy). Unfortunately, it suffers from the same drawbacks all mages have in FFT: charge times and faith modifiers.

Typically, you like your characters to have low faith because it decreases the effectiveness of enemies’ magic. However, it also means your White Mage will heal for very little, its revive skills will have a very low chance of success, and its buffs will always miss.

White Magic is generally pretty fast, so the charge time is less of a concern, but when it comes to healing and reviving, weirdly enough Item, Martial Arts and Iaido are better because they’re instant cast and don’t rely on faith.

Reaction Abilities – Final Fantasy Tactics White Mage

Regenerate, which grants the user the Regen buff whenever they take damage, isn’t totally useless, but it’s not very effective. Regen itself isn’t particularly great — it heals for a very underwhelming amount. However, it’s better than nothing and since White Mage is one of the first classes you acquire, it may be a choice between this and… Counter Tackle. In that competition, you could make an argument for it.

Support Abilities – Final Fantasy Tactics White Mage

Ability NameJP Cost
Arcane Defense400

Arcane Defense increases defense against magic-based attacks. In general, defensive abilities (outside the very OP Reflexes and Shirahadori) in FFT are not that alluring, and Arcane Defense is no exception. It causes you to take marginally less damage from magic attacks, but you can also accomplish taking drastically less damage from magic attacks by simply lowering your characters’ faith. Lowering faith also has the added benefit of not taking up a support slot.

Movement Abilities – Final Fantasy Tactics White Mage

White Mage doesn’t have any movement abilities, so there’s nothing to discuss here.

Final Fantasy Tactics White Mage Overall Assessment

Despite everything working against mages in FFT, White Mage still has a fairly nice skillset. They’re useful early game and as a secondary skillset it can get you out of a jam from time to time. Because of the charge time and faith mechanics, any sort of magic tends to fall off in effectiveness as the game goes on, so it’s difficult to recommend White Magick vs. any of the physical support movesets like Iaido, Martial Arts and Item. However, if you’re not tanking your faith to make your party immune to magic damage, White Magic does provide better support options than those skillsets.
