Nature – Pokemon Sword & Shield Dragapult Moveset
You have a few options when it comes to deciding the optimal nature for your Dragapult. The conventional wisdom might be to go with Timid (+Speed, -Attack), but honestly, Dragapult is so outrageously fast that it doesn’t really need assistance in that department, especially if you’re just playing the base game and not planning to go onto any competitive pokemon modes. Therefore, Modest (+Special Attack, -Attack) is the way to go.
You may be wondering why special attack instead of attack, when Dragapult has higher physical attack stats than special attack stats. Well, it’s up to you, and physical Dragapult is no slouch, but Dragapult’s special attack movepool is simply much better.
Ability – Pokemon Sword & Shield Dragapult Moveset
Dragapult has 3 abilities to choose from: Clear Body, Infiltrator and Cursed Body. Clear Body prevents stat reduction, Infiltrator allows Dragapult to bypass defensive moves like Substitute and Light Screen, and Cursed Body gives a chance for attackers to have their skills disabled. Since Dragapult tends to be a mixed sweeper (an attack-oriented pokemon), Infiltrator is what gives the most offensive bonus, so you’ll want to go with that.
Held Item – Pokemon Sword & Shield Dragapult Moveset
When it comes to the held item, what you’ll usually want to go with is an Expert Belt, which increases super effective damage by 20%. Since Dragapult has a lot of type-coverage, you’ll be able to hit super effective damage against most pokemon that you encounter. Another possible option is Choice Specs, which increase damage more overall, but also lock you into using the same move repeatedly. Since one of Dragapult’s key strengths is its type coverage, I tend to think Expert Belt is a better option. Still, you may disagree.
Moves – Pokemon Sword & Shield Dragapult Moveset
When putting together your moveset for Dragapult in Pokemon Sword & Shield, you’ll want to build something like this:
- Draco Meteor
- Shadow Ball
- Fire Blast
This gives Dragapult a ton of type coverage, two STABs and overall extremely powerful moves with which to lay down the law. If you want to use a physical attacker, you’ll notice the problem right away. The only physical ghost move Dragapult has access to is Phantom Force, which is significantly less useful than Shadow Ball and the only notable coverage move it can learn is Psychic Fangs, which doesn’t expand its coverage very much.
Meanwhile, with the special attack build, Draco Meteor and Fire Blast both boast incredibly high attack power, and Shadow Ball and Thunderbolt are both reliable, high damage moves. Its coverage is immense; it can super effectively hit Dragon, Flying, Water, Bug, Grass, Ice, Steel, Ghost, & Psychic, which is half of all the pokemon types and many of the most common one.
Dragapult Moveset Conclusion
Dragapult is a very versatile pokemon and one of its strengths is its versatility, which makes it somewhat unpredictable. While the build I listed above is, in my opinion, the best build for Dragapult, you could make a physical sweeper build, a mixed sweeper build, or any number of other combination utilizing its extremely large movepool in order to make sure opponents can never predict what pokemon will be safe to pull out against your Dragapult. In terms of the base game, if you use the build above, it will sweep every fight available no problem.
That about covers it when it comes to the best Pokemon Sword & Shield Dragapult Moveset. Be sure to check out the Games Section for more articles like this and click here for more game guides for Pokemon Sword and Shield.
