Pillars of Eternity 2 Chanter Subclass Options

Pure Chanter

Most of the chanter subclasses focus on one of the core aspects of the class (summoning, support, damaging spells, etc) at the expense of the other aspects.

For that reason, there’s a place for a pure chanter, but for the most part, a pure chanter is a suboptimal choice since the benefits for the subclasses generally outweigh the cons.

Beckoner

When it comes to Pillars of Eternity 2 Chanter subclasses, Beckoner is the way to go if you really want to rely on summons. All your summon spells bring forth double the amount of creatures. Double is a pretty significant amount.

The summons have less health and duration and cost more phrases as a tradeoff. It’s not really that noticeable.

If you like the idea of using the Chanter’s summon spells a lot, Beckoner is a good option, though I question whether it’s better than Bellower.

Skald

Skald is the class you pick to utilize the Chanter’s damage spells as much as possible. Skald basically becomes a sort of battlemage.

Offensive invocations cost 1 less phrase and you have a 50% chance to gain a phrase with weapon critical hits, so the point of Skald is that you can be constantly unloading damaging spells.

This is alright, but keep in mind Chanter’s damaging spells are nowhere near as effective as Wizard of Druid spells.

Chanter will mostly be useful for phrases and summons, so it’s really a matter of flavor if you want them casting to deal damage or using weapons. On the whole, though, Skald probably does deal more damage than a normal Pillars of Eternity 2 Chanter.

Troubadour

Troubadour is, in my opinion, the best Pillars of Eternity 2 Chanter subclass because it doubles down on the Chanter’s biggest niche, which is passive team support through phrases.

Phrases overlap much more significantly for the Troubadour, which means you can set up some pretty nasty support combos, like Old Siec (lifesteal) and Mercy & Kindness (increased healing).

Bellower

For any kind of spellcasting Chanter focus, I tend to think Bellower is the best option because while all its invocations cost all phrases, its casting power is significantly increased.

Especially for summons, where there’s a summon limit that’s pretty easy to hit, stronger summons tend to be better than more summons.

You also accumulate phrases relatively quickly so it’s not like blowing all your phrases on every spell is that big of a deal.

Pillars of Eternity 2 Chanter Multiclass Options

Pure Chanter

There’s nothing particularly wrong with a pure chanter build except that it’s a little boring. Its high-level spells are not the huge powerhouses that other classes like Wizard, Monk and Druid get, but they are pretty significant (Dragon summon, blades, etc).

However, the final 2 phrases are not that impactful at all, so if you’re just using your Chanter for phrases and not spellcasting or summons, go ahead and multiclass.

Paladin

Chanter benefits from passively existing on your team so increasing its survivability by multiclassing with a Paladin is a no brainer. Pretty much any subclass works, though Kind Wayfarers would be my pick for even more survivability and team support.

Priest

Priest isn’t the best class in Pillars of Eternity 2, but if you’re making a dedicated support character, a Chanter/Priest is a pretty useful thing to have in your party. It has probably the most healing potential of any character and access to all sorts of team buffs.

Chanter is a great class with a lot of build variety. Generally speaking you want to go with Bellower if you’re going to be casting or summoning and Troubador if you’re going to be using support phrases.
