Ultimate Borderlands 3 Graveward Farming Guide

This Borderlands 3 Graveward farming guide will teach players how to efficiently and quickly farm Graveward in Borderlands 3.

If you’re playing Borderlands 3 and you’ve unlocked Mayhem Mode or you’re getting toward the end of the game, you may have heard that farming Graveward is the best way to max out your level and farm for world drop Legendaries.

If you’re heard that, you’ve heard absolutely right. In Borderlands 3 Graveward farming is the best way to max your level and gear up on Legendaries.

This guide will explain everything you need to know about Borderlands 3 Graveward farming, but specifically, it’s going to tell you all about his attack patterns so you can get through this thing without taking damage even on Mayhem 3+.

Mayhem Levels

First thing’s first, you’re going to want to turn on at least Mayhem 1 to scale Graveward up to your level. The higher you push Mayhem, the more XP and more legendaries you’re going to acquire each time you fight this baddie.

I’d suggest you start with Mayhem 1 and when he starts to feel easy, push it up to Mayhem 2.

Mayhem 3 will award you significantly more experience, but I warn you: it will take much much longer to defeat him each time since he’ll have 125% more HP and take roughly half damage.

If you’re not doing enough damage, you won’t defeat his adds before he summons new ones and eventually you’ll be overrun.

Borderlands 3 Graveward Weakness

You’re going to want a fire weapon. In Borderlands 3 Graveward has a red health bar, as do his adds, so everything in this fight is weak to fire.

I got lucky on one of my early runthroughs and acquired a fire-elemental Vladof Infinity Pistol Legendary which, frankly, made this boss (and much of the rest of the post-game) a joke.

So if you can get that pistol, that’s what I’d recommend, but that’s not very likely. Some other alternatives are a fire-elemental Rowan’s Call or Lucian’s Call, which also take some of the need for ammo off the table.

Borderlands 3 Graveward Attacks

In Borderlands 3 Graveward has a number of attacks which are all easily avoidable if you see them coming.

Tilting the Platform. Graveward will hunked down, reach below the platform and tilt it, causing you to slide down. Once you stop sliding, several green boulders will be hurtling down after you, which you’ll have to dodge.

The best way to avoid this attack is to see it coming and run to the left side of the platform (the top of the tilt) and jump in the ditch there.

You won’t slide, you’ll be completely safe from the boulders, and you’ll be able to jump out right after you see them pass you and have a clear shot at Graveward’s stomach weak point for several seconds.

Right Side Smash. The game telegraphs this attack with a glowing pattern on the floor. Graveward smashes down on the right hand side of the platform and then lingers there for a second.

The important thing to note about this attack is on Mayhem 3 and higher its AoE increases and it’s much, much larger than what’s telegraphed, so when you see this coming be sure to get a good distance to the left.

Also, note that while he’s lingering, he has a big glowing orb in his hand you can shoot at for guaranteed crits.

Cleave. Graveward cleaves across the whole back end of the platform. You have to get up really close to Graveward when you see this coming to avoid it. Also note that its reach actually extends along the sides, so make sure you get to the front middle.

Vomiting Dinosaurs. You’ll see an attack pattern in an arc directly in front of Graveward and he starts spewing all over the place. This summons a number of Grogs. It’s random whether they’re Baby Grogs or Badass Grogs.

On higher Mayhem levels these Badass Grogs take a really long time to gun down, but it’s imperative you take down the adds, especially on higher difficulties, because if you don’t you’ll quickly find yourself in the middle of like 10+ Badass Dinosaurs and then you’re gonna die real quick.

Left Side Thrust. Just like the Right Side Smash, the Left Side Thrust telegraphs its area of effect before he does it. What you might not realize about this attack at first is it summons two Jabbers, randomly either frail or vicious.

These are much easier to deal with than the Badass Grogs, so they’re great for activating any kill skills you might have on your current character.

Giant Chest Laser. After 1/3rd of Graveward’s HP is gone, he’ll start shooting a giant chest laser. This thing is really easy to see coming and really easy to avoid.

It goes across the whole battlefield but it doesn’t quite reach the end, so all you have to do when you see this thing coming out is back up as close to the wall as possible.

This thing not only gives you a lot of time to shoot at Graveward, it makes it really easy to aim for his weak point, since you just shoot where the laser is coming out.

Head Laser. When Graveward hits 2/3rds HP, 1/3rd HP and 10% HP, he’ll fall down, giving you some free time to shoot him right in the face. When he comes out of this state, he’ll shoot a laser out of his head, cutting right down the center of the platform. Really easy to dodge.

Try to anticipate this coming and get on the lefthand side of it so you can jump in the ditch to avoid the stage tilt afterward. He always follows this move with the platform tilt.

Borderlands 3 Graveward Attack Pattern

In addition to Borderlands 3 Graveward’s moves being slow and easily avoidable, he’s also got an incredibly predictable attack pattern that he doesn’t seem to deviate from almost at all.

When you first enter the battle, Graveward will always tilt to the stage. So immediately run to the ditch on the lefthand side and sit in it. Once the green boulders pass over your head you can jump out and start shooting his weak points.

Next, he’ll always do the right side smash. You’re already on the left side so it’s very easily avoided, This is a big damage opportunity because you can unload a few clips into the big weak spot in his hand.

Next, he’ll do a cleave along the back part of the platform, so stay close to Graveward’s body. His weak points aren’t well exposed during the cleave, so don’t worry too much about it.

Following that, he’ll always do the left side thrust, summoning 2 jabbers. Once he’s done that, he’ll vomit out dinosaurs in front of him, then another cleave. Then he’ll do right side smash, then tilt the platform and he’ll basically repeat this pattern for most of the fight.

However, once he hits 2/3rds HP (which you can get him down to before his second or third attack comes out on Mayhem 1 if you’re buff), he’ll fall down, exposing his head. Get right in front of it and just unload straight into his face point-blank.

If you’re using a gun with a normal ammo type, you can usually get 2 or 3 clips off. As soon as he starts to lift his head, sprint toward the ditch on the left side of the platform because the pattern he’ll do here is always the same: center head laser directly into platform tilt, then when the platform straightens out he’ll do the full-screen laser.

As his HP gets lower he starts adding the full-screen laser to the rotation more and more often, but the pattern stays basically the same. Once you’ve gone through this fight half a dozen times, you’ll have a pretty good sense of knowing what he’s going to do long before he actually does it.

Notes About Drops

In Borderlands 3 Graveward will usually drop at least one Legendary on Mayhem 1. On Mayhem 3 I often see him drop 3 Legendaries at a time. So his drop rate is pretty good.

Whether or not you get Legendaries that are actually useful is all luck of the draw. The best Legendaries I’ve gotten from him are Lucian’s Call, Rowan’s Call, Infinity, Legendary Class Mods, and Warlord.

However, the Legendaries I’ve gotten from him most often are The Lob (Torgue Shotgun, I’ve gotten like 10 of these), and Ward (Legendary Shield, somewhat mediocre shield that boosts melee and gives health regen). These are Borderlands 3 Graveward’s specific drops.

He has a few others (Moxxi’s Endowment and Grave Artifacts). All Borderlands 3 Graveward’s specific drops are pretty mediocre, so they’re going to clutter up your inventory.

Finally, a quick note about the vault. There are 4 chests inside, sometimes they contain legendaries, but they take 40-45 minutes to respawn. Keep that in mind. You don’t have to check in the room every time you beat the fight (which will take you like 4-5 minutes on Mayhem 1 once you get a good fire elemental gun). Check every 40 minutes or so.
