Let’s Talk About Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2

Final Fantasy 7 Remake hit the streets about two weeks ago, sold a ton of copies (2.3MM digital sales alone), and many fans have already had time to devour the game, so I want to start talking about Episode 2. Let’s get some predictions going. This is my attempt to open up some kind of discussion on the topic of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Episode 2. I don’t have a comments section here, so feel free to respond in the YouTube comments or on Twitter.

The Title – Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2

First of all. The title. What do you think the title’s going to be? Is it going to be “Final Fantasy 7 Remake Episode 2”? “Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2”? Just “2”? Is it going to keep the “Remake” moniker or change it to something else? A lot of people are throwing around some possible naming convention like “Remake” “Remix” “Rebirth” or something along those lines.

“Final Fantasy 7 Remake Episode 2” is what’s stuck in my mind. Boy, that is a mouthful, though. What do you think the title for the next installment will be?

The World Map

In the original game, when you step out of Midgar, that’s the first time you get introduced to the world map and the whole world of the game opens up. Personally, based on all the clear influence from cinematic Western games like Red Dead Redemption and Assassin’s Creed, and even the open world trend in recent jRPGs like Dragon Quest XI and Xenoblade Chronicles, we’re going to be looking at a similar approach. I think it’ll be a lot like Assassin’s Creed or Red Dead, where you have this big open world map and then these fairly fleshed out cities you can find within it. That makes sense and seems doable if the sequel encompasses say, Kalm, Junon, Casa del Sol, Corel/Golden Saucer, etc. Most of these open world games seem to be able to accomplish roughly 3 fully fleshed out cities and a handful of small towns.

What do you think? What’s the world map going to be like?

The Scope of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2

Narratively, if they mostly stick to the plot of the original, there are just a few places where it would make sense for the second installment to climax. The boat from Junon to Casa del Sol, but that would be way too short. Nibelheim, if they sort of cram all of the story surrounding Nibelheim throughout the game into the first time you visit. Temple of the Ancients, which would sort of make sense and leave a bit of a cliffhanger ending with Aerith leaving the party and Cloud psychologically wrecked. Aerith’s death, which is what most people tend to think the natural endpoint should be. Finally, the Northern Crater, which, given the pacing of the first installment, seems like more content than they’ll be able to put in the game.

Based on what I experienced in Episode 1, I feel like we’ll probably get roughly the same amount of content, probably a little bit more. So, the first game was 18 chapters. Also, given that I think it’ll be a sort of Assassin’s Creed/Red Dead open world style World Map, I’m thinking about what other games like that were able to accomplish in terms of scope.

So let’s break it down. Again, assuming the plot doesn’t get heavily remixed, Kalm, that’s definitely going to be in there. Chocobo Farm through Junon, that’s a pretty sure bet. Everything up to Golden Saucer, scope-wise, seems doable. Beyond that it starts to feel like we’d be stretching far beyond the content we got in the first installment. Maybe Gongaga. Maybe Cosmo Canyon. If I had to bet money, I’d say the game ends at Nibelheim.

What do you guys think? Do you agree that the game might end in Nibelheim? Do you think they’ll be able to fit all the content from leaving Midgar to Aerith’s death in the next game?

Final Fantasy 7 Remix

I think that while they’ll mostly stick to the same major plot beats of the original, we’re in for some story expansion and remixing, just like the original. Do you think it’s going to go totally of the rails and be about parallel universe, time-traveling Sephiroth? I don’t, really.

If I take the first episode in a vacuum and sort of think about what was heavily hinted at, or what’s probably going to get fleshed out, I think Red XIII is definitely going to get a lot of focus, which makes me think we’ll almost certainly make it as far as Cosmo Canyon. I think that Zack, since he’s introduced at the end, is going to have some plot thread that probably gets resolved in Gongaga and Nibelheim, rather than what they did in the original, which was have Zack sort of teased at the start and then never mentioned again except in the Easter Egg scene when you revisit Nibelheim extremely late in the game. I think Yuffie is surely going to get introduced and since they really put a lot more focus on the Midgar-Wutai war in episode 1, while we may not visit Wutai, we’ll probably feel its presence, like maybe there’s a sense that Midgar and Wutai are competing for influence over some of these territories after Junon.

I think aside from the main thrust of the plot, which is surely still going to be the pursuit of Sephiroth, Zack, Red XIII, Yuffie and the whole Barret/Corel arc are going to be central focuses of the plot and probably Rufus, Scarlet, Heidegger and probably Reeve are going to have an expanded role in the plot.

What do you think? Does that sound like a reasonable expectation? Hit me up on Twitter.

New Playable Characters

As far as new playable characters, I don’t think we’ll make it to Vincent or Cid. Actually, since I think the game will end in Nibelheim, maybe Vincent just barely gets introduced right at the end, but doesn’t quite join your party yet

I think we’ll definitely see Yuffie, since Wutai got talked up so much in episode one.

I think Red XIII joining as a permanent party member is a 100% certainty.

I think Cait Sith joining up is pretty certain given the foreshadowing they had with Reeve and the fact that he makes a little camero during one of the cutscenes in Episode 1.

I think that’s about all the bandwidth they can handle in terms of new playable characters given how much attention to detail went into the animations for the 4 characters in Episode 1, how much thought went into making sure they had unique playstyles, and how they’re going to have to not only bring in these new characters but also add to the abilities of the existing 4 characters. Like, they’re going to have to make sure the new characters live up to what they were able to accomplish with the first installment’s roster and the OG characters are going to have even more skills and abilities. So I can’t imagine they’d be able to add all 5 other characters and have them feeling good.

Plus, if they added all the party members in Episode 2, they wouldn’t have any left to add in Episode 3.

I realize this is my own sort of personal pet wish, long-term, and we’re talking about Episode 3-4, Reno pulls a Vegeta and joins your party. I’ve always wanted Reno as a party member ever since the original game. That has nothing to do with Episode 2, I just thought I’d mention it.

What do you guys think? Do you think every party member is going to join up? Just Red, Yuffie and Cait? Even fewer?

Final Boss – Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2

If it ends in Nibelheim… is the final boss going to be Sephiroth again? In fact, no matter where it ends, are we going to be fighting Sephiroth as the final boss for every installment? Is he going to become like this wacky Saturday morning cartoon reoccurring villain? Like, instead of being this menacing, foreboding presence, he’s just Team Rocket? You beat him up and he runs off like arghhh, foiled again, see you again next week? I hope not.

Still, since I’ve kind of convinced myself the game will end at Nibelheim, I can’t imagine what else they would do with that area. Unless the Shinra people get heavily involved with the events of Nibelheim for some reason, that’s a totally Sephiroth-centric area. It wouldn’t make sense for anyone but Sephiroth or Jenova to be the final boss of that area, and the mountain path’s Dragon and the Materia Keeper aren’t memorable enough to be a final boss.

Having Sephiroth be the final boss two games in a row, though, would be pretty lame.

What do you think? Are we going to be fighting Sephiroth again?

So those are my major thoughts on Final Fantasy 7 Remake Episode 2. Let me know what you think on Twitter. Be sure to check out the Games Section for more content like this, and click here for more game guides and articles for Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
