Patchwork Overview – XCOM Chimera Squad

Patchwork is a DPS caster who deals additional damage against Robots. She’s sort of the opposite of Terminal; a GREMLIN drone user who deals damage instead of healing. Her unique skill is Chaining Jolt which deals 4 damage and chains to enemies within 2 tiles of the target.

Like all other characters in XCOM Chimera Squad Patchwork can rank up 5 times, and gets a permanent talent choice at ranks 2 and 4 and additional training options at ranks 3 and 5.

Rank 1: Deputy Agent – XCOM Chimera Squad Patchwork

Combat Scanners

Description: The GREMLIN scans the room, applying Holo-Targeting to all enemies. Increases the squad’s Aim by +15 against marked enemies. One use per mission.

As far as breach moves go, Patchwork’s is a pretty good one. On single encounter maps or the last encounter of multiple encounter maps, it provides a pretty significant power increase to your whole party during the breach. Not bad at all.

Rank 2: Field Agent – XCOM Chimera Squad Patchwork

Voltaic Arc

Description: The GREMLIN shocks enemies if they move too close to Patchwork or if Patchwork moves close to them. This attack chains to nearby enemies.

This ability is very strong. It only deals 1 damage (when you first get it), but it goes off a lot. If 3 enemies move into melee range of Patchwork, it’ll hit the first one, then the first and the second, then all 3. Also, if you use Patchwork to subdue an enemy, she’ll deal an additional point of damage as she runs up to them, making her subdue damage 3-4 instead of 2-3. This move is wild. Definitely pick it up.

Threat Recognition

Description: Upgrades Combat Scanners to have 1 additional use per mission and grant +25 Crit to all allies at the breach point.

For any other character, this would be pretty good. I mean, there a tons of maps with only one encounter, but other than that, +25 Crit on breaches is a fairly significant bonus. However, it’s matched up against Voltaic Arc, which is one of the few moves in this game that’s actually a significant powerup instead of an “ok” bonus. Threat Recognition isn’t bad, but go for Voltaic Arc, for sure.

Rank 3: Special Agent – XCOM Chimera Squad Patchwork

Stasis Field

Description: Patchwork sends the GREMLIN to place the target unit into Stasis for 1 turn. The unit cannot attack but is immune to damage. Stasis Field has a 2 turn cooldown.

Stasis Field has a few situational uses, but for the most part it won’t see much action. You’ll probably find 2-3 moments to use it during the course of the whole campaign, but it can be pretty useful when those situations do arise. Since it’s not competing against any other moves and you get it for free, there’s not much to complain about.

Rank 4: Senior Agent – XCOM Chimera Squad Patchwork

Shock Therapy

Description: Upgrades Chaining Jolt to Disorient and potentially Stun targets.

This isn’t bad, but once again, like Threat Recognition, it’s up against a much better skill. The chance to Disorient is not very compelling, but stuns in this game tend to be pretty powerful, so that’s great. This is actually a nice upgrade and I wouldn’t blame you for taking it, but I’d recommend its competitor in this tier.

High Voltage

Description: Chained electric attacks from Chaining Jolt or Voltaic Arc deal 1-3 extra damage.

This skill really turns Patchwork from a great early and midgame unit into a late game powerhouse. Read the description carefully. An extra 1-3 damage. So it improves from 1 to 2-4 damage. If enemies are clumped together you can hit all of them for 4 damage with Patchwork’s extremely reliable Chaining Jolt skill every turn. It also affects Voltaic Arc, which turns it from a little bonus damage into an actual threat. Highly recommend this skill.

Rank 5: Principal Agent – XCOM Chimera Squad Patchwork

Capacitor Discharge

Description: Patchwork sends the GREMLIN to a location where it emits a substantial electric discharge, damaging and potentially Stunning all nearby units. Robotic units take more damage. One use per mission.

It’s basically a strong nuke with a chance to stun in a huge AoE. Extremely powerful. Even though it’s limited to one use permission, it’s probably one of the best ultimates of any character overall. It does decent damage, has a significant stun chance, will outright kill most robots, and the AoE is huge. Very strong skill.

Training Bonuses – XCOM Chimera Squad Patchwork

Unlock Potential (Rank 3): Utility Item Slot increased by 1.

Storm Generator (Rank 5): Increases the chain range of Chaining Jolt.
