Skills – Dragon Quest 11 Rab

In Dragon Quest 11 Rab gets access to 3 different skill trees: Enlightenment, Heavy Wands, and Claws. Enlightenment gives Rab passive stat bonuses and a few additional spells. Heavy Wands gives Magical Might and Mending bonuses along with a handful of fairly useless staff skills. Claws gives attack and MP absorption bonuses along with claw skills.

You should decide whether you’re going to use a staff or claws with Rab. I recommend claws, since he gets the best claw skill and it makes Rab, who’s a jack of all trades to begin with, more versatile, but Rab is going to be middling at whatever he does no matter which one you pick, so it’s really up to you.

In Act 1 it doesn’t really matter which weapon you pick. You should go into Enlightenment to get Right as Rain and, while you’re there, you might as well pick up all the stat bonuses.

In Act 2, when Rab’s grid expands, you’re going to want to refund all your skill points. After you’ve done that, put them all into whichever weapon you’re not going to invest into to unlock at least one of the two stat nodes that border the locked nodes in Enlightenment, then refund the points from that tree.

Those two nodes you unlocked are actually Enlightenment nodes, so they won’t get refunded, but you will get refunded for all the points you spent to unlock them. You want those nodes. Those locked nodes in Enlightenment are Rab’s best spells (Kazammle, Kacrackle).

What I’d recommend is going up the staff side to unlock the MP nodes, then refunding staff, then focusing on Claw skills to unlock Hard Claw, Wild Animaul and the two agility nodes. Once you’ve done that, focus exclusively on Enlightenment to unlock Kazammle and Kacrackle.

After you’ve got Rab’s best spells, finish off the Claws skill tree. Ignore all the abilities you can (all of them are single-target attacks that are weaker than Wild Animaul), but grab all the attack power/MP absorption/crit chance nodes.

Once you’ve done that, just start dumping points into the Staff tree. Its main value will be that on turns where you’re planning to cast spells, you can swap out Rab’s claws for a staff in battle for the stat bonuses, then swap back to claws whenever you don’t need the staff bonuses.

With that, you’ve got Rab about as well optimized as he’s going to get.
