Skills – Dragon Quest 11 Serena

Serena is a bit different than other characters because her skill grid changes dramatically in each act, so you’re likely going to be respeccing her repeatedly. Also, her skill grid just… isn’t particularly good, for a lot of the game.

When you first get her, you may want to temporarily invest all her points into spears for a while because her natural magical mending can easily heal your characters to full without any need to equip a wand, and it’s nice to have an extra physical attacker during that early part of the game.

Around the time you get Jade, a real spear user, you’ll probably want to spec Serena out of spears and into wands. Grab everything in Wands. If you’re playing with Super Strong Monsters activated, you absolutely want Snap, Crackle, Poof, because there are some bosses that practically require it.

Next, head into Harpistry. Those Hymns come in handy on hard mode on a few bosses, but the main reason is there are some extra Magical Mending nodes up there and Harpistry is a better complement for wands than spears.

In Act 2, you’ll notice that Serena’s skill grid has changed substantially. In my opinion, you really don’t need to change up her build too much. You’ve probably gotten everything useful from Wands and Harpistry, and while you may want to equip Heavy Wands during this period, there’s absolutely nothing useful in her Heavy Wands tree except a single Magical Might +10 node.

So, rather than respeccing, I suggest snagging Hypnowhip for a measly 3 SP to unlock Holier Hymns, then concentrating on Vim, taking Enchanting Echo as soon as you can.

In Act 3, when Serena’s grid fully expands, she’s back to investing in Wands and Harpistry. Again, none of Serena’s nodes are particularly useful. You’ll want to finish off Wands, especially Divine Restitution near the bottom, then finish off Harpistry to get the two Holier Hymns nodes, then head down the righthand side of the Spears tree to unlock Kaswooshle.
