Zidane – Final Fantasy 9 Best Equipment

final fantasy 9 best equipment zidane
  • Zidane’s Best Weapon: Ultima Weapon
  • Zidane’s Best Helmet: Thief Hat
  • Zidane’s Best Armlet: Power Wrist
  • Zidane’s Best Armor: Ninja Gear
  • Zidane’s Best Addon: Running Shoes

Zidane’s Best Weapon – Ultima Weapon

The Ultima Weapon requires no additional explanation. It simply has the highest attack power of all of Zidane’s weapons.

The Ultima Weapon can be picked up by using a Dead Pepper with an Ocean or Golden Chocobo in the spot where the Shimmering Island used to be during Disc 4.

When it comes to Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, a lot of it is found from treasure hunting with the chocobo and this item is no exception.

Zidane’s Best Helmet – Thief Hat

Hats and Helmets provide magic defense. In that sense, the Circlet is the best Hat available to Zidane in Final Fantasy 9. However, because of the way that stat boosting works in the game, the Thief Hat is almost always a better choice unless you’re already at level 99.

The difference in magic defense is marginal, but Zidane’s Thievery skill is dependent on his Speed stat, which the Thief Hat increases. In that sense, Zidane’s best hat is by far the Thief Hat.

The Thief Hat, like a lot of the Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, can be bought from the Black Mage Village on Disc 4.

Zidane’s Best Armlet – Power Wrist

While the Bracer technically provides more defense, again, stat bonuses are more worthwhile than a trivial amount of additional defense. For that reason, you’re going to want to go with the Power Wrist when it comes to choosing Zidane’s best wrist.

The Power Wrist, like a lot of the Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, can be purchased from Daguerreo on Disc 4.

Zidane’s Best Armor – Ninja Gear

In addition to providing a speed bonus, the Ninja Gear also absorbs dark-elemental magic. making it a shoe-in for Zidane’s best armor. The Brave Suit provides more defense overall but, again, the extra defense pales in comparison to the stat bonuses and elemental absorption provided by the Ninja Gear.

The Ninja Gear can be purchased, like a lot of the Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, from the Daguerreo weapon shop on Disc 4 or stolen from Quale after catching 99 frogs.

Zidane’s Best Addon – Running Shoes

Raising Zidane’s speed is your top priority when it comes to his best equipment, and Running Shoes give the best speed boost of any addon. So, if you’re not equipping a different addon to learn an ability or to defend against a particular element for a specific boss battle, it’s best to have him wearing Running Shoes whenever possible.

In addition ot being Zidane’s best addon, when it comes to Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, Running Shoes are great for every character since they teach the invaluable support skill, Auto-Haste.

The earliest you can get Running Shoes is in Alexandria Castle by defeating Tantarion. You can also steal them from Hades, defeat the monster in the Treno weapon shop on Disc 3, bring Vivi and Quina to Quan’s Dwelling on Disc 3/4 or synthesize them in Black Mage Village on Disc 4.

Garnet – Final Fantasy 9 Best Equipment

final fantasy 9 best equipment garnet
  • Garnet’s Best Weapon: Tiger Racket
  • Garnet’s Best Helmet: Holy Miter
  • Garnet’s Best Armlet: Magic Armlet
  • Garnet’s Best Armor: Robe of Lords
  • Garnet’s Best Addon: Ribbon

Garnet’s Best Weapon – Tiger Racket

Garnet and Eiko share a best weapon, which is the Tiger Racket. Garnet does have an ultimate rod, the Whale Whisker, but once you’ve learned the spells on that you’re almost assuredly going to be switching over to the Tiger Racket.

You get the Tiger Racket by visiting Quan’s Dwelling near Treno once you have an Ocean Chocobo and using a Dead Pepper in the fishing spot toward the back.

You get the Whale Whisker from Chocograph 18, Ocean.

When it comes to Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, a lot of it is found from treasure hunting with the chocobo and these items are no exception.

Garnet’s Best Helmet – Holy Miter

The Holy Miter increases Magic by 1 and Spirit by 2 while also granting the third highest overall magic defense, making it the best headgear for every mage. Garnet is no exception. When it comes to Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, you can get a lot of mileage out of Holy Miters since they’re useful to all mages.

The Holy Miter can be found in Pandemonium on the throne after the team regroups, acquired from the Fairy Island chocograph, or purchased, like a lot of the Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, from the Black Mage Village weapon shop on Disc 4.

Garnet’s Best Armlet – Magic Armlet

Even though the Magic Armlet is a mid-game piece of equipment, its unbeatable +2 to Magic makes it the best thing to have equipped to Garnet from the moment you get it all the way through to the end of the game.

You could make an argument for the N-Kai Armlet, which raises Spirit and Defense, but ultimately Garnet’s heals will always be powerful and raising Magic to improve her summons has a greater impact overall.

The Magic Armlet can be purchased at multiple shops beginning with the Black Mage Village in Disc 2. Even though they’re acquired early, Magic Armlets are incredibly useful when it comes to Final Fantasy 9 best equipment.

Garnet’s Best Armor – Robe of Lords

While Vivi and Eiko are often better off with the Black Robe and White Robe, respectively, due to their greater stat and elemental damage boosts, Garnet’s best armor is by far the Robe of Lords, which boasts both the highest defense of any robe as well as stat bonuses for every stat.

There are multiple ways to acquire a Robe of Lords. Exchange 10,000 points from Chocobo Hot & Cold; turn in all the Stellazzio coins; steal from Hades, Quale or Ozma; or synthesize at the Hades synthesis shop.

Garnet’s Best Addon – Ribbon

Garnet’s best addon, the best addon for all mages, and arguably the best general addon for any character is the Ribbon. The Ribbon gives +3 Magic, +1 Strength, +1 Spirit, +1 Defense, +1 Magic Defense, +5 Evasion and +4 Magic Evasion. It also absorbs Water and Wind and halves damage from Fire, Ice, Thunder and Holy.

One is gotten from the Forgotten Island Chocograph and one is gotten automatically during the story at Mt. Gulag. A third is gotten from Stiltzken in Disc 4 in Alexandria if you bought all his packages throughout the game. You can get more from the auction house in Treno for hundreds of thousands of gil apiece, but 3 should be plenty.

Ribbons are one of the single best items in the game in terms of Final Fantasy 9 best equipment and you should try to acquire several of them.

Vivi – Final Fantasy 9 Best Equipment

final fantasy 9 best equipment vivi
  • Vivi’s Best Weapon: Mace of Zeus
  • Vivi’s Best Helmet: Holy Miter
  • Vivi’s Best Armlet: Magic Armlet
  • Vivi’s Best Armor: Black Robe
  • Vivi’s Best Addon: Ribbon

Vivi’s Best Weapon – Mace of Zeus

Vivi’s Mace of Zeus staff, which teaches his ultimate spell, Doomsday, is found in Memoria on the platform right below where the fight with Lich takes place. When it comes to Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, a lot of it is found in Memoria, and this item is no exception.

Vivi’s Best Helmet – Holy Miter

The Holy Miter increases Magic by 1 and Spirit by 2 while also granting the third highest overall magic defense, making it the best headgear for every mage. Vivi is no exception.

Vivi’s Best Armlet – Magic Armlet

Even though the Magic Armlet is a mid-game piece of equipment, its unbeatable +2 to Magic makes it the best thing to have equipped to Vivi from the moment you get it all the way through to the end of the game.

The Magic Armlet can be purchased at multiple shops beginning with the Black Mage Village in Disc 2. Even though they’re acquired early, Magic Armlets are incredibly useful when it comes to Final Fantasy 9 best equipment.

Vivi’s Best Armor – Black Robe

While the Robe of Lords provides higher defense and gives stat bonuses to multiple stats, Vivi only needs Magic and the Black Robe provides a higher magic stat bonus.

In addition to that, the Black Robe boosts damage of the darkness element, which increases the power of Vivi’s strongest spell, Doomsday. Just make sure everyone’s equipped with darkness absorbing equipment if you’re going to spam Doomsday.

There are 3 ways to get a Black Robe. You can find one early by using the Dead Pepper spot in the water near the southern tip of the Forgotten Continent; you can steal it from Lich in Memoria (which is extremely late); or you can synthesize it in Daguerreo.

When it comes to Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, a lot of it is found from treasure hunting with the chocobo and this item is no exception.

Vivi’s Best Addon – Ribbon

Vivi’s best addon, the best addon for all mages, and arguably the best general addon for any character is the Ribbon.

Steiner – Final Fantasy 9 Best Equipment

final fantasy 9 best equipment steiner
  • Steiner’s Best Weapon: Excalibur II/Ragnarok
  • Steiner’s Best Helmet: Kaiser Helm/Grand Helm
  • Steiner’s Best Armlet: Venetia Shield/Gauntlets
  • Steiner’s Best Armor: Grand Armor/Tin Armor
  • Steiner’s Best Addon: Power Belt

Steiner’s Best Weapon – Excalibur II/Ragnarok

Steiner’s best weapon is the Excalibur II, but most people consider the requirements for getting it so onerous and awful that they just consider his second best weapon, Ragnarok, to be his ultimate weapon.

Ragnarok is gotten from the Outer Island Chocograph. When it comes to Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, a lot of it is found from treasure hunting with the chocobo and this item is no exception.

Excalibur II is found at the very, very end of the game in the room where you fight Lich just before the final boss if you in-game clock is under 12 hours. If you want this weapon and you’re not insane, if you’re using the Steam version you can just use the memoria save editor to add it to your inventory or change your in-game clock so you can pick it up.

Steiner’s Best Helmet – Kaiser Helm/Grand Helm

The Grand Helm has the highest magic defense of Steiner’s helmets, while the Kaiser Helm grants +1 Strength with only a mild hit to magic defense. The reason this is more debatable than with other characters is that Steiner doesn’t need very much strength to be hitting for 9999 damage with Shock and the Grand Helm gives +1 Speed which is arguably more useful.

On the other hand, you’ll be using normal attacks more often than you’ll be using Shock, so it’s not a bad idea to maximize Steiner’s Strength for that purpose. It’s up to you. In my opinion, the Grand Helm is the better choice.

You can synthesize a Grand Helm at the Black Mage Village synthesis shop on Disc 4 or steal one from Tiamat in Memoria.

You can buy the Kaiser Helm, like a lot of the Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, at the Daguerreo weapon shop on Disc 4.

Steiner’s Best Armlet – Venetia Shield/Gauntlets

With Steiner’s best arm-slot item, you face the same dilemma as you do for his helmet. Do you want more Strength or more Speed? The Venetia Shield is more well rounded defensively and provides Strength, Magic Defense and (useless) Magic stats that boost your stats permanently when leveling.

Meanwhile, the Gauntlets provide +1 Speed and also halves Fire/Earth/Water/Wind elemental magic damage, making them much more powerful defensively overall. Ultimately I think that Gauntlets are the better option.

Gauntlets can be synthesized at Black Mage Village in Disc 4 and found in the Dead Pepper spot near Oeilvert. When it comes to Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, a lot of it is found from treasure hunting with the chocobo and this item is no exception.

Venetia Shields can be bought in Esto Gaza after the Desert Palace, in Daguerreo during Disc 3 and from the moogle in Ipsen’s Castle.

Steiner’s Best Armor – Grand Armor/Tin Armor

Grand Armor gives +1 Strength and Tin Armor gives no additional stats. Normally I’d say this is a no brainer – go with the stat boosting armor, especially when the Grand Armor’s defensive stats are so high.

However, the Tin Armor’s defensive stats are extremely better than any other options, it’s only available to Steiner and it feels like a special piece of equipment, so I think it’s worthwhile to equip.

As we discussed previously, Strength on Steiner is only truly useful for his normal physical attacks, since Shock will hit 9999 damage very early, even with fairly low Strength.

On the other hand, forging the Tin Armor requires you to use the Mallet item, which slightly alters the ending if you keep it. The change to the ending is nothing amazing, just a small bonus scene, but it’s worth mentioning. You could always just watch it on youtube.

I’d say go with the Tin Armor, personally.

Tin Armor is synthesized in Hades’ shop in Memoria by using the Mallet you get from completing the Stellazzio quest.

Grand Armor can be stolen from the Nova Dragon when first entering Memoria and can also be synthesized, like a lot of the Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, in the Black Mage Village synthesis shop on Disc 4.

Steiner’s Best Addon – Power Belt

Power Belt increases Strength by 3 and Defense by 2. Perfect for Steiner.

You can find Power Belts in most synthesis shops on Disc 2.

Freya – Final Fantasy 9 Best Equipment

final fantasy 9 best equipment freya
  • Freya’s Best Weapon: Dragon’s Hair
  • Freya’s Best Helmet: Kaiser Helm/Grand Helm
  • Freya’s Best Armlet: Venetia Shield/Gauntlets
  • Freya’s Best Armor: Grand Armor
  • Freya’s Best Addon: Barette

Freya’s Best Weapon – Dragon’s Hair

Freya’s best weapon, Dragon’s Hair, is found by using a Dead Pepper on the mountain crack northwest of Oeilvert. When it comes to Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, a lot of it is found from treasure hunting with the chocobo and this item is no exception.

Freya’s Best Helmet – Kaiser Helm/Grand Helm

The Grand Helm has the highest magic defense of Freya’s helmets, while the Kaiser Helm grants +1 Strength with only a mild hit to magic defense. The reason this is more debatable than with other characters is that Freya doesn’t need strength to be hitting for 9999 damage with Dragon’s Crest and the Grand Helm gives +1 Speed which is arguably more useful.

On the other hand, you’ll be using normal attacks more often than you’ll be using Dragon’s Quest, so it’s not a bad idea to maximize Freya’s Strength for that purpose. It’s up to you. In my opinion, the Grand Helm is the better choice.

You can synthesize a Grand Helm, like a lot of the Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, at the Black Mage Village synthesis shop on Disc 4 or steal one from Tiamat in Memoria.

You can buy the Kaiser Helm at the Daguerreo weapon shop on Disc 4.

Freya’s Best Armlet – Venetia Shield/Gauntlets

With Freya’s best arm-slot item, you face the same dilemma as you do for her helmet.

Freya’s Best Armor – Grand Armor

Unlike Steiner, Freya doesn’t have access to any special armor. The best option for Freya’s endgame armor is, hands down, the Grand Armor. It boasts amazing defense as well as a very useful +1 Strength bonus.

Grand Armor can be stolen from the Nova Dragon when first entering Memoria and can also, like a lot of the Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, be synthesized in the Black Mage Village synthesis shop on Disc 4.

Freya’s Best Addon – Barette

The Barette is a female-only addon that increases Strength by 3, Magic by 1, Spirit by 1 and Magic Defense by 1. Since Freya is the only female character that gets any value out of Strength and the Barette is in a 3-way tie for providing the most strength of any addon, it tends to be her best-in-slot for this category.

Barettes can be found in most synthesis shops in Disc 2/3.

Quina – Final Fantasy 9 Best Equipment

final fantasy 9 best equipment quina
  • Quina’s Best Weapon: Gastro Fork
  • Quina’s Best Helmet: Circlet
  • Quina’s Best Armlet: Bracer
  • Quina’s Best Armor: Robe of Lords
  • Quina’s Best Addon: Ribbon

Quina’s Best Weapon – Gastro Fork

To get Quina’s best weapon, the Gastro Fork, all you need to do is collect 99 frogs and defeat his mentor, Quale.

If you collect frogs every time you complete a story segment and always leave a male and female frog in each location, you should get 99 frogs by Disc 4 without much trouble.

Quina’s Best Helmet – Circlet

Ultimately Quina gets almost no benefit from stats for anything you’d ever want to use him for (Bad Breath, Mighty Guard, Frog Drop, White Wind), so there’s very little point in raising his stats via equipment. Therefore, it’s best to just give him the equipment with the highest defense values. That means Quina’s best helmet is going to be a Circlet.

You can acquire a Circlet by defeating the Behemoth in the weapon shop in Treno on Disc 4. You can also, like a lot of the Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, synthesize them in the Black Mage Village on Disc 4. Finally, you can acquire one via the Outer Island 2 Chocograph.

Quina’s Best Armlet – Bracer

As with Quina’s other equipment, he doesn’t have much need for stats, though the +1 Strength on the Bracer is nice. It also increases Wind damage, which increases the power of Twister, which is Quina’s best direct attack magic.

You can get a Bracer by synthesizing it, like a lot of the Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, at the Black Mage Village on Disc 4.

Quina’s Best Armor – Robe of Lords

Robe of Lords is just a great overall piece of equipment for Quina. It raises his stats in a balanced way while also providing fantastic physical defense and immunity to wind.

There are multiple ways to acquire a Robe of Lords. Exchange 10,000 points from Chocobo Hot & Cold; turn in all the Stellazzio coins; steal from Hades, Quale or Ozma; or synthesize at the Hades synthesis shop.

Quina’s Best Addon – Ribbon

Quina’s best addon, the best addon for all mages, and arguably the best general addon for any character is the Ribbon.

Eiko – Final Fantasy 9 Best Equipment

  • Eiko’s Best Weapon: Tiger Racket
  • Eiko’s Best Helmet: Holy Miter/Circlet
  • Eiko’s Best Armlet: Magic Armlet
  • Eiko’s Best Armor: White Robe
  • Eiko’s Best Addon: Ribbon

Eiko’s Best Weapon – Tiger Racket

Garnet and Eiko share a best weapon, which is the Tiger Racket. Eiko does have an ultimate flute, the Angel Flute, but once you’ve learned the spells on that you’re almost assuredly going to be switching over to the Tiger Racket.

You get the Tiger Racket by visiting Quan’s Dwelling near Treno once you have an Ocean Chocobo and using a Dead Pepper in the fishing spot toward the back. When it comes to Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, a lot of it is found from treasure hunting with the chocobo and this item is no exception.

You get the Angel Flute from Memoria in the room where you see Alexandria castle out the window. When it comes to Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, a lot of it is found in Memoria, and this item is no exception.

Eiko’s Best Helmet – Holy Miter

The Holy Miter increases Magic by 1 and Spirit by 2 while also granting the third highest overall magic defense, making it the best headgear for every mage. Eiko is no exception.

Eiko’s Best Armlet – Magic Armlet

Even though the Magic Armlet is a mid-game piece of equipment, its unbeatable +2 to Magic makes it the best thing to have equipped to Eiko from the moment you get it all the way through to the end of the game.

You could make an argument for the N-Kai Armlet, which raises Spirit and Defense, but ultimately Eiko’s heals will always be powerful and raising Magic to improve her summons has a greater impact overall.

The Magic Armlet can be purchased at multiple shops beginning with the Black Mage Village in Disc 2. Even though they’re acquired early, Magic Armlets are incredibly useful when it comes to Final Fantasy 9 best equipment.

Eiko’s Best Armor – White Robe

Even though the Robe of Lords gives more defense and boosts additional stats, the White Robe is the better choice for Eiko. The White Robe gives 2 points of magic and boosts holy elemental damage, which is great for Eiko because Holy and Madeen, both holy elemental spells that use magic, are the best spells in Eiko’s arsenal.

There are a two ways to acquire a White Robe. You can synthesize one at Daguerreo or you can collect one from the Sea at Dusk Chocograph. You can also steal one from Trance Kuja, but that’s far too late to be useful. When it comes to Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, a lot of it is found from treasure hunting with the chocobo and this item is no exception.

Eiko’s Best Addon – Ribbon

Eiko’s best addon, the best addon for all mages, and arguably the best general addon for any character is the Ribbon.

Gulag. You can get more from the auction house in Treno for hundreds of thousands of gil apiece, but 3 should be plenty.

Ribbons are one of the single best items in the game in terms of Final Fantasy 9 best equipment and you should try to acquire several of them.

Amarant – Final Fantasy 9 Best Equipment

final fantasy 9 best equipment amarant
  • Amarant’s Best Weapon: Rune Claws
  • Amarant’s Best Helmet: Green Beret
  • Amarant’s Best Armlet: Power Wrist
  • Amarant’s Best Armor: Power Vest
  • Amarant’s Best Addon: Power Belt

Amarant’s Best Weapon – Rune Claws

Amarant’s best weapon, the Rune Claws, are found in Memoria in the room where a staircase is leading up into a gigantic eye. When it comes to Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, a lot of it is found in Memoria, and this item is no exception.

Amarant’s Best Helmet – Green Beret

The Green Beret is a mid-game piece of equipment that doesn’t give much magic defense, but it does boost both strength and speed, stats Amarant needs a lot more than a little extra magic defense.

You can purchase a Green Beret from Oeilvert or the Desert Palace.

Amarant’s Best Armlet – Power Wrist

While the Bracer technically provides more defense, again, stat bonuses are more worthwhile than a trivial amount of additional defense. For that reason, you’re going to want to go with the Power Wrist when it comes to choosing Amarant’s best wrist.

The Power Wrist, like a lot of the Final Fantasy 9 best equipment, can be purchased from Daguerreo on Disc 4.

Amarant’s Best Armor – Power Vest

As you can tell, we’re trying to maximize Amarant’s Strength stat as much as possible. Unlike most other characters, he doesn’t get any automatic 9999 damage skills with special mechanics, so if you want his No Mercy skill to hit hard, you’re going to want to pile on the strength.

to that end, Amarant’s best armor is another piece of mid-game equipment, the Power Vest, which gives +2 Strength.

You can buy a Power Vest in Esto Gaza after completing the Desert Palace, as well as Ipsen’s Castle. You can also find one in Oeilvert and steal one from Ark.

Amarant’s Best Addon – Power Belt

Like almost all of Amarant’s other best gear, this one has power in the name and it raises strength. Power Belt increases Strength by 3 and Defense by 2. Perfect for Amarant.

You can find Power Belts in most synthesis shops on Disc 2.
