As your progress through the first dungeon you’ll be collecting runes every time you defeat an enemy. In order to level up, you’ll need to use these runes to increase your stats at various Sites of Grace.
Unlocking Level Up – Elden Ring How to Level Up
In Elden Ring how to level up is done at Sites of Grace. First, before you’ll be able to level up at any of the Sites of Grace, you need to unlock the ability.
When it comes to Elden Ring how to level up, the fastest way to unlock the option to level up at Sites of Grace is by resting at the Site of Grace located at the Gatefront, which you can see on the map below.
Gatefront is located northwest of the northwestern tip of the big lake in Limgrave. If you’re following the golden trails that come out of the Sites of Grace, they’ll eventually lead you to the Gatefront site.
Be sure to actually rest at the Gatefront Site of Grace and not just unlock it, otherwise you won’t see the cutscene which unlocks leveling.
Once you’ve rested at the Gatefront Site of Grace and unlocked the ability to level up, you’ll be able to level up every time you encounter a new Site of Grace and rest there.
Actually Leveling Up – Elden Ring How to Level Up
Once you’ve visited the Gatefront Site of Grace and unlocked the ability to level up, you’re going to want to actually use that ability to increase your character’s stats.
At each Site of Grace throughout the game you’ll see the option to level up your character.
At the level up screen, you can spend the runes that you earn from defeating enemies to level up your character. Runes are the same currency you use in shops and everywhere else in the game.
If you die, all your runes are lost until you locate your corpse. If you die on the way back to your corpse, those runes are lost forever. Since most people die often in Elden Ring, it’s likely wise to spend your runes before you inevitably lose them.
Each time you spend runes to increase your stats, the rune cost for your next stat boost increases.
Attributes – Elden Ring How to Level Up
Every time you level up in Elden Ring you’ll be improving one of your attribute (stat) points.
When it comes to improving your stats, you have 8 options to choose from.
- Vigor, which increases HP
- Mind, which increases FP
- Endurance, which increases stamina and max equipment load
- Strength, which increases physical damage
- Dexterity, which increases damage for dexterity-based weapons as well as casting time
- Intelligence, which increases damage for sorcery magic
- Faith, which increases effectiveness of faith based magic
- Arcane, which increases discovery and affects some magic spells
You should decide early what type of build you want to go with your character so that you can select the right stats to improve each and every time you level up.
