How to Beat Elden Ring Rennala

This Elden Ring Rennala Boss Guide will teach you how to beat Rennala in the Raya Academy area of Elden Ring.

If you’re playing Elden Ring and you don’t get tortured into quitting before the first dungeon, eventually you’ll reach the Raya Lucaria Academy. The boss of this area is named Rennala, and she’s a doozy. Which is probably why you’re reading this Elden Ring Rennala boss guide.

If you’re having difficulty with Elden Ring Rennala, you’ve come to the right place.

Elden Ring Rennala Phase 1

In Phase 1, Rennala will be hovering in the middle of the room surrounded by a golden bubble.

All over the floor will be slow moving magician apprentices. They are mostly harmless but occasionally will do a flamethrower attack, so run around them and try not to stay near them for too long.

You should take note that you can and should use summoning ashes during this fight. The wolves in particular will really help, and if they survive phase 1, they’ll still be around to help in phase 2.

As you run around, pay attention to indications on the floor that a chandelier is going to fall. The chandelier will most likely kill you in one hit, so keep moving and if you run into a spot that’s yellow and has little red reflections popping up, get out of there immediately.

One single magician will be tapped by Rennala and will be throwing books at you. You can recognize which one is the right one because it will be shining gold and it will be hurling books at you.

All you need to do is hit the glowing apprentice one time and the gold light will move to another apprentice. Repeat this 3 times. After the 3rd time, Rennala will lose her shield and drop to the floor. This is your opportunity to deal as much damage as you can.

After the first time Elden Ring Rennala falls, she’ll begin raising apprentices off of the ground and turning them into projectiles. Ideally you’ll be good enough at finding and sniping the glowing apprentices that you’ll have her drop her shield before she can get this attack off. That’s the best way to prevent it.

However, that’s easier said than done sometimes, especially when the glowing apprentice is hidden behind one of the bookcases and you have to run around for a long time looking for it.

In that case, make sure you pay attention to Rennala herself as you run around if it feels like she’s been up there for a while. She’ll emit a swirling white wind animation and then the 5 projectiles hovering around her will launch at you.

They will break on walls, but they’ll also break the wall and there are 5 of them, so you will most likely have to dodge.

If you can find the glowing apprentices quickly this fight will be over quickly. The key to this fight is dealing with Elden Ring’s extremely finicky targeting system. One rule of thumb to remember is that it tends to target what is closest to you, not what you’re looking at. So if you’re having trouble targeting the right apprentice or the boss herself with so many enemies on screen, try getting as close as possible to make it easier.

Elden Ring Rennala Phase 2

After you beat Rennala’s phase 1 form, you’ll be teleported to one of the coolest boss battle environments of all time and you’ll fight Elden Ring Rennala in her fullblown wizard form.

Rennala casts a number of spells. The main one is a beam spell, which she’ll always use to start the fight. The key to dodging this is to watch her pulling in energy. She pulls in energy, the circle shrinks. When it stops shrinking, there’s a tiny pause, then you roll. Don’t roll right when the magic energy finishes charging. Charging finishes, slight pause, then roll.

The next one to look out for is Rennala’s Full Moon, which will most likely kill you if it hits. It’s slow moving, but it follows you around for quite a while. Just get away from it. She rarely casts this so if she does, just focus on not dying to it, don’t worry about trying to get hits in while it’s chasing you around.

The most common spell Elden Ring Rennala will cast is Star Shower, which is a bunch of blue projectiles that follow you around. The easiest way to avoid them is to just roll forward once they launch at you.

At around half HP, Rennala will begin summoning monsters. You can choose to kill them if you like, but I wouldn’t recommend it. The summons are temporary and they will eventually despawn. In my experience it was much better to continue to focus on Rennala and just keep dodging the summons’ attacks.

She has a variety of monsters she can summon. If she summons the dragon, you’re in for a rough time. She can also summon wolves, a fast warrior with a sword, and a giant troll. Most of them are a nuisance at best. You’ll most likely die because you’re distracted by them and one of Rennala’s spells hits you. As her health gets lower, she may have two summons active at once.

If you summoned your wolves (or another summon) like I mentioned in phase 1, they will really help here as they’ll be able to help split the aggro from Rennala and her summons.

Elden Ring Rennala Fight Rewards

Once you beat Elden Ring Rennala you’ll gain access to the ability to respec your stats and change your appearance.

Additionally, the Remembrance of the Full Moon Queen she drops can be exchanged for the Carian Regal Scepter, a powerful staff (arguably the most powerful staff) or a high level spell called Rennala’s Full Moon.

Carian Regal Scepter or Rennala’s Full Moon? – Elden Ring Rennala

Once you receive the Remembrance of the Full Moon Queen for defeating Elden Ring Rennala, you can take it to the Roundtable Hold and exchange it for your choice of items: the Carian Regal Scepter or Rennala’s Full Moon.

Carian Regal Scepter is a powerful staff with a 60 Intelligence requirement that also scales with Dexterity and Strength. Once it reaches +7 it begins to outpace the Meteorite Staff, which is most likely the staff you’ll have when you find this one if you’re playing Astrologer and you’ve been following my guides or any other guides online.

Rennala’s Full Moon, on the other hand, is a high level spell that requires 70 Intelligence, so you probably won’t be able to use it for a long time if you choose to select it. By the time you have 70 Intelligence, you’ll most likely be at the point where you can get another copy of Rennala’s Remembrance of the Full Moon Queen.

So I’d say you should go with the Carian Regal Scepter.

That about covers it for the Elden Ring Rennala Boss Guide. Be sure to check the main page for more RPG guides, and check out the Elden Ring section for more guides for Elden Ring.
