If you’re not prepared, attempting to beat Darkest Dungeon 2 Bosses can be devastating for your party. Lair Bosses can end a run, even if you have a great party and fantastic trinkets.

I’ve been playing Darkest Dungeon 2 since Early Access first began. Darkest Dungeon 2 has been my go-to game for months, and I’ve beaten every boss dozens of times, so I feel qualified to teach my readers how to beat the Darkest Dungeon 2 Dreaming General and other bosses.

Without further ado, let’s talk about how to beat the Darkest Dungeon 2 Dreaming General Boss.

Party Preparation – Darkest Dungeon 2 Dreaming General

The first step to beating any Darkest Dungeon 2 boss if selecting a viable party at the Crossroads at the outset of your run.

I’m not going to cover party selection in depth in this guide, but here are some tips in general, specifically related to the Dreaming General.

First, you need at least two people who can hit the back row. Plague Doctor is great for this, and is practically required for most balanced parties anyway, since she’s the only reliable healer. Plague Doctor has the ability to hit both the back row and the boss at once.

Occultist also has the ability to hit the back row and the Darkest Dungeon 2 Dreaming General with the same move, so that’s another great choice.

Hellion is another good choice because she can use Iron Swan to smack the back row when necessary. Highwayman, also, has the ability to hit the back row effectively, although Highwayman is a little more dependent on which Character Path he has.

So you need 2 characters who can hit the back row. You’ll also want a healer and a stress healer, which means Plague Doctor and either Jester or Man-at-Arms (or both). You can get by without Plague Doctor or Jester if you’re experienced, but I wouldn’t recommend it for most runs. It just makes things much easier.

If you don’t have at least two characters who can hit the back row, the Dreaming General will eventually ensnare your entire party and devastate them for several rounds before unleashing a run-ending super nuke on your party.

Here are some examples of good parties:

  • Plague Doctor, Jester, Highwayman, Man-at-Arms
  • Plague Doctor, Occultist, Man-at-Arms, Hellion
  • (Advanced) Occultist, Jester, Runaway, Hellion

When deciding on a party, you’ll want to take Character Paths into account. Having 4 characters with strong Character Paths is usually better than having a perfectly balanced party with no Paths or weak Paths, so pay attention to Character Paths when selecting a party.

In the above screenshots, for instance, I used Grave Robber instead of Jester because she had a strong Path on that run and Jester had a weak one.

Darkest Dungeon 2 Dreaming General Boss Strategy

The Darkest Dungeon 2 Dreaming General’s arsenal of abilities is pretty limited.

The shtick is this: every round, the stump behind the Dreaming General adds a stack of entanglement to two of your party members. Every party member has one stack the entire fight by default, every round two characters will receive another stack.

If a character reaches 3 stacks, they become entangled and instead of getting a turn, they’ll take damage and deal stress damage to your entire party.

If all of your characters get entangled, the Dreaming General will use the Nightmare ability, which removes the entanglements but deals massive damage and stress damage to your entire party.

Hitting the stump in the back row removes a stack of entanglement from one party member. Therefore, you need to hit the back row stump twice every round. Most bosses require you to hit the back row, so make sure you’re able to do that.

If you can’t hit the back row twice, do what you can and bum rush the boss’s health down as quickly as possible. You’ll probably eat a Nightmare, but you can still win.

Aside from the entanglements and the Nightmare ability, the boss has only two moves.

First, he’ll use Unsettling Whispers, which is a single target nuke that deals significant stress damage. This isn’t that big of a deal, and you can mitigate the damage any number of ways. You can use Man-at-Arms or Leper’s tanking skills, you can blind the boss, you can just eat the hit. It’s just not that big of a threat.

Second, he’ll use The Waking Dead, which is a stronger nuke that hits two party members. The Waking Dead activates once you’ve hit the back row stump a few times, and you get a warning about it. The stump will use a move called “The Soil Stirs”, and it will let you know which party members are about to get nuked.

This, too, is not that big of a problem. You can typically heal through it. The only way this really screws you up is if you’re using your healer to hit the back row and you need to redirect your healer’s attention to healing instead of removing entanglements.

However, if you’re putting out good damage and reliably hitting the back row twice per round, the Darkest Dungeon 2 Dreaming General should be on the verge of death by the time you start running into health problems.

As with most Darkest Dungeon 2 bosses, if you can bring some Healing Salves or Smoke Grenades into the fight, you’ll probably have a much easier time.

The Darkest Dungeon 2 Dreaming General is one of the easier Darkest Dungeon 2 bosses, so if you’re still unexperienced with the game and you have a choice between The Tangle or, say, The Shroud (which has more difficult encounters), you may want to steer towards The Tangle, where the Darkest Dungeon 2 Dreaming General is located.

Rewards – Darkest Dungeon 2 Dreaming General Trophies

Each of the Darkest Dungeon 2 Lair Bosses has 2 trophies they can drop at random. The Darkest Dungeon 2 Dreaming General boss trophies are both pretty good.

The first one, “The Nightmare’s End”, gives -75% reduced trinket prices at Inns and the Hoarder. This is a huge price reduction.

It makes all the store bought trinkets practically free, and usually the shops stock 1-3 high-end trinkets at every shop. They normally cost 70-100 relics, which limits you to maybe 1-2 per run, but with this boss trophy the price drops to 15-25 relics, which means you can buy them out to your heart’s content.

Plus, if you get a better boss trophy for combat, like the Librarian’s trophy or the other Dreaming General trophy, you can momentarily swap it out for The Nightmare’s End at an Inn to get the discount and then swap it back in.

The other trophy you can get from the Darkest Dungeon 2 Dreaming General is also great. It doubles damage to corpses (meh) and more importantly prevents all position movement.

This means you can have, say, have a Rogue Path Highwayman (+25% damage in Rank 1 as of this writing) use Point Blank Shot over and over again every round without repositioning. There is a ton you can do with this.

However, be warned there are a few circumstances where it can really mess you up. The main one that comes to mind is fighting the Leviathan boss, because a character in the back row can get pulled under the water and then spat out in position 1 and you’ll have no way to move them.

All in all, the Darkest Dungeon 2 Dreaming General is a great lair boss to choose to fight. It’s the easiest of all the bosses in my opinion and it gives great trophies.
