Chapter 20: Violence

Siles gave his speech. Unimportant prattling and lip service about his joy at having his donors and the movers and shakers of the Nevada upper-class gathered around him. He assured them that the water crisis affecting the citizens below wouldn’t be a problem for any of them. “Enjoy the champagne!” he concluded with.

As the party goers dispersed back into their idle mingling, Grant and Carnegie approached Governor Siles. Andromeda and Apache watched as they exchanged muted words. Siles’s body language didn’t display the confidence or charisma of his speech, only the apologetic, rat-like diplomacy of an underling trying to reassure a superior. After several minutes the tension seemed to ease. Carnegie was wearing a wide smile and put his hand on Siles’s shoulder, gripping it hard and then slapping it a few times. Siles’s face melted into relief. But it was only for a moment.

In a split second, Carnegie, still wearing an enormous smile, moved his hand to Siles’s neck and gave it one strong grip. A loud crack leapt out of the Governor’s neck and his face went blank. Carnegie lifted him up above his head with both arms and threw him through the window, down onto the protesters below. He turned around and looked at the party goers, mouths agape and frozen in shock.

“Alright folks,” he said with a booming baritone. “Party’s over. Get the hell out.”

The screaming from the protesters below carried all the way to the top floor suite. Almost instantly the fistfights exploded into a fullblown battle. Sticks and bats came out on one side and the other side brought out their own melee weapons in response. Sirens began to blare. Then, as the last of the party goers exited, the first gunshot went off.

Andromeda and Apache stayed, watching the two assassins. The two assassins locked eyes with them as the chaos expanded, reveling in satisfaction. Carnegie carried a cocky grin, clearly excited at what was coming. Grant stayed his usual stoic self. The door of the elevator closed, carrying the last of the party goers away, leaving Andromeda and Apache alone in a disheveled suite with the two men.

Carnegie cracked his knuckles and rolled up his sleeves, revealing his forearm-bound gatling guns. “Been hoping to get another chance to meet you. Where’s the rest of the gang?”

Andromeda and Apache stared him down, not answering. Carnegie gave a little laugh. “Doesn’t matter. We’ll find you all. Glad you saved us the trouble tonight,” he said, still grinning. Then, just like with Siles, he switched into an aggressive posture in the blink of an eye, raising his arms and beginning to fire.

Andromeda reacted in an instant, ducking and blinking her eyes into the purple and black dotted starscape of the eternal cosmos. She lifted her hand, creating a vertical wall of purple portals. The bullets from Carnegie’s guns whisked harmlessly into faraway space as Apache kicked into gear and rushed at him from the side, hitting him hard with a linebacker tackle that knocked him to the ground.

As Apache struck Carnegie, Grant, too, made his first move, stepping quickly to grab the position at Apache’s flank and unsheathing a mid-length wakizashi style short sword. As he prepared to plunge it into Apache’s solar plexus, Apache took notice and slipped his hand around Grant’s arm like a snake, diverting his momentum. He squeezed Grant’s wrist with a crunch, causing Grant to scream in agony as the sword fell out of his hand. Apache swung his right arm, pulled back in his stance, toward Grant’s face.

As he was about to land the hit, Carnegie pulled Apache’s legs out from under him, knocking him to the ground. Apache snarled as he fell backward. Carnegie stood up and tried to get on top of him, but Apache planted his foot firmly into his chest, sending him backward with such force that he smashed a hole into the nearby wall.

Apache stood up quickly and centered himself into a proper fighting stance. Grant collected his blade from the ground and Carnegie, too, began to reset his position. Apache rushed down Carnegie as he was trying to collect himself, and Grant rushed at Apache from his side.
