Why Fight the Reaper? – Persona 4 Golden Reaper
After defeating the Persona 4 Golden Reaper, you’ll receive the most powerful weapon in the game for each individual member of your active party, starting with the main character.
Once every member of your active party has obtained their ultimate weapon, the Reaper will begin to drop Godly Robes. It’ll also have a very low chance of dropping an Omnipotent Orb, which nullify all attacks except Almighty.

How to Find the Reaper – Persona 4 Golden Reaper
Finding the Reaper in Persona 4 Golden is more of a chore than it is a challenge. The Persona 4 Golden Reaper has a chance to show up in every 22nd chest you open, as long as it’s a chest that has a possibility for a shadow to appear inside of it. The Reaper never shows up in locked, Golden Chests.
Once you open 21 chests, you’ll hear chains rattling, which means that the next chest you open has a chance of revealing the Reaper.
The chest count persists through saves and changing dungeons and dungeon floors. However, if you’ve reached 21 chests and you’re hearing the chains, leaving the dungeon you’re currently in or changing floors will reset the chest count.
In order to reliably encounter the Persona 4 Golden Reaper, you need to count the chests you open. Once you reach 20 chests, leave the dungeon and head to level 5 of Yukiko’s Castle. You should make sure to have a healthy stock of Goho-Ms (or a Persona with Traesto) so you can escape and save level 5 as the entry point for Yukiko’s Castle.
The reason you want to go to level 5 of Yukiko’s Castle is that the layout is always the same and it has exactly 2 normal chests with a high chance of containing a shadow. So once you get 20 chests accumulated, head to level 5 of Yukiko’s Castle and open both chests there.
The easiest way to accumulate 20 chests is to go into level 1 of Yukiko’s Castle and open the 4 chests there 5 times. However, this isn’t necessary. You can farm in whatever dungeon you want, as long as you keep track of all the chests you open and leave when you have exactly 20.
You’ll know you’ve encountered the Reaper when you get a dialog box upon interacting with the chest. Your party members will warn you against opening the chests. Do it anway, and you’ll have the opportunity to fight the Reaper.
Fighting the Reaper – Persona 4 Golden Reaper
The Reaper fight is not terribly different from every other boss fight in Persona 4 Golden. It has no weaknesses or resistances and it’s immune to Light and Dark.
It takes two turns every round and often wastes its turns by casting elemental break spells, like Fire Break and Ice Break, in order to remove your allies’ immunities.
It casts heavy damage elemental spells on your entire party, as well as Mind Charge and Mamudoon. This can be fairly powerful, but if you’re level 70 or so you should be fine.
If you have Yoshitsune, you can kill Reaper in 3-4 turns with the main character alone while also being immune to almost all of the Reaper’s attacks. If you manage to get Repel Dark, Absorb Wind, Absorb Ice, and Absorb Fire on your Yoshitsune the Reaper can’t damage you at all (nor can anything else in the game).
If you’re in the extra month and have Naoto’s 3rd tier Persona, you can cheese Naoto’s Shield of Justice Skill in order to defeat the Reaper without taking any casualties, but it really shouldn’t be necessary at that point.
Defeating the Reaper in Persona 4 Golden is not nearly as big of a challenge as encountering the Reaper in Persona 4 Golden. If you want to outfit your entire party with their best equipment, that means defeating the Reaper 14 times. That’s several hours of running around Yukiko’s Castle level 1 opening chests.
However, I would recommend that you only collect the weapons for the character you’re planning on using because unlike Persona 5, in Persona 4 Golden, your equipment doesn’t carry over in New Game+. All your Reaper equipment will disappear when you beat the game, so only farm what you’re planning to use.
