Game Review: Shadowrun Dragonfall

4) The gameplay is really stellar.

Sure there are some glitches and errors in the the game, which you mostly won’t notice, but overall the gameplay is incredibly good. It’s got everything you want in an RPG — character creation, character classes, a highly customizable level up system, a cast of party members with unique skills and abilities who you can customize just enough to make them your own, and battles where the moment-to-moment gameplay feels satisfying and crisp. A lot of this crispness comes from the sound – when you blast someone with your rifle, the enemy’s ‘ugh’ and the gunfire and impact sounds really hit solidly.

5) In fact, this game should probably win some sort of award for sound.

Sure, the art style is great, unique, and overall the game looks good. But everyone talks about art in games — they almost all look good and spend a long time on their art style. So much of the ambiance and general mood of this game is developed by strong sound design in terms of the music and sound effects that it’s really a star player here.  Maybe sound’s Oscar category is ‘best supporting actor’, and art is the ‘leading man’, but here the best supporting actor really stands out as having gone above and beyond.
