Recruitment – Fae Tactics Matilda
In order to unlock Matilda, the first thing you have to do is when asked to meet Croix-Mer in the woods in Rohwan, you have to go alone. That means you need to manually remove all members of your party except Peony. If you bring additional party members to this story sequence, Matilda will be gone for good.
With just Peony, your summons and assistance from Croix-Mer, you need to beat a series of story fights during which you’ll save a dying faery.
Continue directly with the Rohwan questline. If you don’t repair Matilda within 10 days of rescuing her in the woods, she’ll be gone forever. Once you’ve defeated Dagon and Mirrar, a story event will appear where you can repair Matilda.
To complete the story event, you need: 10 Scrap Metal, 5 Mana Crystals, 5 Copper Wires and 2 Rune Stones. You should have those, but you might want to hold off on upgrading any devices throughout the Rohwan area just to make sure you have these materials available.
Once you’ve repaired Matilda, she’ll join your party permanently and you’ll be free to play the rest of the game as normal.
Abilities – Fae Tactics Matilda
Like every other leader character in Fae Tactics Matilda gets both an Ultra Attack Skill and an Ultra Assist Skill. For Matilda, these are:
- Ultra Attack: Vengeance
Fires wildly at all nearby targets.
- Ultra Assist: Booster
Greatly increases target’s Atk.
Like other leaders in Fae Tactics Matilda can use a portion of her ultra orbs to perform an EX skill. For Matilda, the skill is:
- Fate: Adds a random curse to attack. (Costs 1 Ultra)
Like most characters in Fae Tactics Matilda has a variety of character-specific bonuses that she gets regardless of which weapon she’s using. For Matilda, these are:
- Aerial: Can fly over most terrain. +5% Evd.
- Grants ally faeries +10 Def/Res and gains +10 Def/Res for every ally faery
- Hex Hunter: +25% Damage against Enchanted/Cursed targets
Weapons – Fae Tactics Matilda
Matilda’s available Fae Tactics weapons are the Chariot, the Chariot XII 05, and the Chariot MkII.
- Arcane Element
- Spirit Link
- Wait Skill: Arcane/Water/Earth Totem
- How to Unlock: Default Weapon
Review: All of Matilda’s weapons are available the moment you recruit here and there’s little difference between them other than the element and the bonus range on her Electric weapon.
The Arcane beam gets spirit Link which is alright if your team is stacked full of Arcane characters. I’m not sure why you would do that, though. The maximum bonus is only about as good as a single cast of the Rally Talisman.
Chariot XII 05
- Electric Element
- +1 Range
- Wait Skill: Electric/Fire/Earth Totem
- How to Unlock: Default Weapon
Review: The +1 Range and the Electric typing make the Chariot XII 05 Matilda’s best weapon in general. Again, there isn’t a huge difference between her weapons.
- Wind Element
- Wait Skill: Wind/Ice/Water Totem
- How to Unlock: Default Weapon
Review: The Wind beam has Synergy, which means that her Haste assist also applies to herself, which is a decent enough bonus. I’d say this weapon is roughly equal to the Electric version and you should use whichever one has a better element for your current map.
Traits – Fae Tactics Matilda
In Fae Tactics Matilda, like every other character, has 3 options when allocating Trait Points: Offense, Defense, and Special.
The bonuses she gets from each line are:
- Offense: Vengeance +Range/Damage
- Defense: Booster +Atk
- Special: Whirlwind
Matilda’s base atk is severely lacking so you’ll definitely want to invest in her Offense line. Her Ultra, Vengeance, is one of the best things about her, so increasing its effectiveness with the end-of-line bonus Matilda gets through her Offense line is definitely attractive.
The Barrier Drain that Matilda gets from her Defense line is nice, but not essential. After you max out her Offense line, what I’d recommend is putting points into her Defense line until it’s maxed out at level 40 and then removing all those Defense points and putting them into Special instead to unlock Whirlwind.
The reason being, the Special line’s bonuses are completely worthless, but Whirlwind is an exceptionally useful skill. Meanwhile, the Defense line’s bonuses are decent, but I guarantee you that you’re never, ever going to use her Booster Ultra Assist over Vengeance.
Scroll Options – Fae Tactics Matilda
In Fae Tactics Matilda acts as a damage dealer, debuffer and support character. With that in mind, here are some great scroll options for Matilda:
- Exploit Scroll: +X% Critical Damage
Matilda doesn’t have very high attack power, but she does have great elemental coverage, innate +40% crit damage and Whirlwind, which increases crit chance. As a result, an Exploit Scroll will help her damage output by ensuring that even if her standard attacks don’t do much, her crits will take off big chunks of Hp.
- Ruinous Scroll: -X Def on Hit
All of Matilda’s weapons are Beam Weapons, which means they’re capable of hitting multiple enemies in a line. If you equip her with a Ruinous Scroll, that means she can apply a defense debuff on multiple enemies at once. Also, if you use her ult, which hits almost the entire map, you can apply defense debuffs on almost every enemy.
- Warrior Scroll: +X base Atk
Matilda’s main weakness is that she’s an attacker with low base atk. The Warrior scroll helps fix that, pretty much doubling her overall attack power. Definitely worth considering for Matilda.
Conclusion – Fae Tactics Matilda
Matilda is one of the 3 hidden Fae Tactics characters.
Her normal attack is not particularly strong, but it’s capable of hitting multiple enemies in a line since it’s a beam attack. Combine that with the fact that her elemental coverage is very strong (Wind, Electric and Arcane) and she’s usually capable of getting a fair amount of crits.
Matilda is also uniquely capable of dropping totems, which absorb ~4 attacks for your team. These defensive totems are a strong defensive option, especially in boss fights where bosses are routinely capable of one-shotting at least one of your characters every round.
Where Matilda really shines, though, is her ultra. The AoE on her ultra ability is massive, and it hits every enemy in the AoE multiple times. This ultra will kill most low level enemies, will probably kill leaders, and will absolutely execute any wounded leaders waiting around. To top it off, it doesn’t have a huge orb requirement so it’s regularly available.
Matilda is kind of a pain to recruit, but she’s worth it. Definitely one of the better Fae Tactics characters.
