If you’re playing Darkest Dungeon 2, you’re going to want to be able to reliably beat the Darkest Dungeon 2 Leviathan. Completing Lairs in Darkest Dungeon 2 gives massive advantages. You get great trinkets, special stagecoach upgrades, and mastery points.

If you’re not prepared, attempting to beat Darkest Dungeon 2 Bosses can be devastating for your party. Lair Bosses can end a run, even if you have a great party and fantastic trinkets.
I’ve been playing Darkest Dungeon 2 since Early Access first began. Darkest Dungeon 2 has been my go-to game for months, and I’ve beaten every boss dozens of times, so I feel qualified to teach my readers how to beat the Darkest Dungeon 2 Leviathan and other bosses.
Without further ado, let’s talk about how to beat the Darkest Dungeon 2 Leviathan Boss.
Party Preparation – Darkest Dungeon 2 Leviathan
The Darkest Dungeon 2 Leviathan boss is probably the most difficult of all the Lair Bosses, so if you’re planning to take it on, you’re going to want to be prepared.
For the Leviathan, unlike most bosses, you need characters who can hit ranks 1 and 2 reliably, and hard. When the Leviathan raises its hand, it’ll submerge one of your characters and start attacking twice per round. You want to take it out as quickly as possible.
Some good options for this fight are a Rogue Highwayman, a Leper (Tempest preferred), and a Hellion (ideally Ravager).
You’ll probably also want a Plague Doctor, both for healing and for her ability to deal decent rank 1 damage from the back row. A Surgeon or an Alchemist are your best bet.
Lastly, Jester is always a good choice due to its stress healing ability. Slice Off and Fade to Black come in handy as well.
Runaway is also a decent option, mostly due to her Smokescreen ability, which can prevent a lot of damage over the course of the fight.
Here are some examples of good parties:
- Plague Doctor, Jester, Leper, Highwayman (Rogue)
- Plague Doctor, Jester, Runaway, Hellion
- Plague Doctor, Jester, Man-at-Arms, Hellion
When deciding on a party, you’ll want to take Character Paths into account. Having 4 characters with strong Character Paths is usually better than having a perfectly balanced party with no Paths or weak Paths, so pay attention to Character Paths when selecting a party.
I want to note here that even though you might be tempted, you do not want to equip the Dreaming General trophy that roots your party for this fight. If the Leviathan submerges your backrow character and spits it out in the front, you’re pretty much guaranteed a loss.
Darkest Dungeon 2 Leviathan Boss Strategy
The Darkest Dungeon 2 Leviathan boss is, in my opinion, the most difficult of all the Lair Bosses.
Leviathan has a host of devastating abilities. Every round it’ll inflict Blind, Vulnerability and Stress damage on your entire party with Breath of the Sea. Compare that to The Librarian, who also has a skill that inflicts Blind and Vulnerability, but only affects one character.
Leviathan also deals significant damage to your entire party every round with Tidal Surge. This skill also inflicts the Barnacles status on your characters, which causes them to receive a stack of bleed whenever they move position.
Apart from those two main skills, every other round the Darkest Dungeon 2 Leviathan boss will raise its hand out of the water, which you’ll need to deal with right away.
Leviathan’s hand will immediately grab and submerge one of your characters. You can predict which characters will be pulled under. It’ll be one of the two characters who has the special status Leviathan inflicts with its Eye of the Storm ability.
The targeted character can resist being pulled under if you get lucky, but most of the time you’ll lose that character until you can defeat the hand. For that reason, you’re going to want to be able to kill the hand in one round.
Leper’s Chop skill, Highwayman’s Point Blank Shot and Hellion’s Howling End skills are ideal for this. You’re going to have a way easier time if you have one or two of those characters in your party.
If you don’t manage to kill the hand quickly, it’ll start attacking your party twice per round. It’ll always hit the characters with the special targeted status the boss applies.
It can be helpful to bring Runaway or Jester along for this fight purely to inflict blind via Smokescreen or Fade to Black respectively. If you can get the Darkest Dungeon 2 Leviathan boss to miss its big party-wide nukes a few times, you’re going to have a lot better chance of surviving this fight.
In a nutshell, to beat this fight, here’s what you need to do: kill the hand as soon as it appears as quickly as possible, try to keep the boss debuffed so its big nukes don’t destroy your party, and nuke down the boss as quickly as possible.
As with most Darkest Dungeon 2 bosses, if you can bring some Healing Salves or Smoke Grenades into the fight, you’ll probably have a much easier time. For this fight specifically, it would also be beneficial to bring along Milk-Soaked Linen to remove Blindness.
Rewards – Darkest Dungeon 2 Leviathan Trophies
Each of the Darkest Dungeon 2 Lair Bosses has 2 trophies they can drop at random. The Darkest Dungeon 2 Leviathan boss trophies alright. One is situationally really good depending on your party, the other is just ok.
The first Darkest Dungeon 2 Leviathan Boss trophy is The Beck and Call, which doubles bleed damage dealt and received. This can either be the best-in-slot trophy in the game or completely worthless depending on your party and trinkets.
If your party includes Hellion, Jester and potentially a Surgeon Plague Doctor, The Beck and Call is going to increase your damage potential tremendously, especially if you have some of the trinkets that improve bleed damage. Highwayman can also get some use out of this.
Some trinkets that improve bleed damage are Leather Strop (+1 round bleed duration) and the Fisherman’s Line (3 damage bleed 50% of the time with Scrap Grenade equipped).
The other Darkest Dungeon 2 Leviathan Trophy is The Still Waters reduces Flame Drain by 50%.
This is alright. Flame Drain isn’t usually too much of an issue, and it’s pretty much useless in the final area, especially compared to other trophies, but it’s better than nothing.
