If you’re not prepared, attempting to beat Darkest Dungeon 2 Bosses can be devastating for your party. Lair Bosses can end a run, even if you have a great party and fantastic trinkets.

I’ve been playing Darkest Dungeon 2 since Early Access first began. Darkest Dungeon 2 has been my go-to game for months, and I’ve beaten every boss dozens of times, so I feel qualified to teach my readers how to beat the Darkest Dungeon 2 Librarian and other bosses.

Without further ado, let’s talk about how to beat the Darkest Dungeon 2 Librarian Boss.

Party Preparation – Darkest Dungeon 2 Librarian

As with most bosses, you’re going to want to be able to reliably hit the back row for the Darkest Dungeon 2 Librarian. However, it’s not as crucial as it is for the Dreaming General or the Seething Sigh, because the Librarian will move forward as the fight progresses.

Being able to hit position 4, 3 and 2 is crucial, though, because if the Librarian gets to position 1, you’re going to have a very difficult time. You also want to be able to take out each of the book stacks when they reach 15 HP to prevent the Librarian from using his full-party nuke.

Highwayman is great for this fight, especially Sharpshot Highwayman, because he’s able to reliably hit every position.

Grave Robber is another good choice, although she’s generally speaking one of the weaker characters. Still, a Deadeye Grave Robber can put out some pretty good damage.

Occultist is another great option, especially Warlock or Aspirant.

As per usual, Plague Doctor is a great choice because of her healing abilities. She can also hit the back row with her Plague Grenade skill.

Man-at-Arms is another great pick, almost entirely because of the Retribution skill. If you can pick up a Bulwark Path Man-at-Arms, all the better. Man-at-Arms is also useful because of his Stress Healing ability.

Jester is usually a good option for any party, especially if you don’t have Man-at-Arms, since he has the best Stress Healing abilities in the game.

The Darkest Dungeon 2 Librarian boss doesn’t deal that much stress damage, but you should keep in mind you need to go through the rest of the run with your party as well, so Stress Healing is important.

Runaway isn’t particularly good in this fight because The Librarian is immune to burns and she can only hit the back row with her Firefly skill, which deals very little damage without the burn.

Here are some examples of good parties:

  • Plague Doctor, Jester, Highwayman, Man-at-Arms
  • Plague Doctor, Occultist, Man-at-Arms, Hellion
  • (Advanced) Occultist, Jester, Grave Robber, Hellion

When deciding on a party, you’ll want to take Character Paths into account. Having 4 characters with strong Character Paths is usually better than having a perfectly balanced party with no Paths or weak Paths, so pay attention to Character Paths when selecting a party.

Darkest Dungeon 2 Librarian Boss Strategy

The Darkest Dungeon 2 Librarian boss isn’t that difficult if you’re prepared ahead of time. As long as you can reliably his positions 4, 3 and 2, you should be able to take the Librarian out before it advances to the front row and starts nuking your party every turn.

The basic mechanic of the fight is that every round the Librarian deals 15 damage to a stack of books. If it manages to get the killing blow on any of the book stacks, it will it your entire party for about 12 damage and add a stack of burning to all your party members.

When a stack of books gets down to 15 health, try to kill it off yourself as quickly as possible so the Librarian can’t get the last hit. If you can manage that, you’ll avoid the Librarian’s big damage attack.

Aside from its big nuke, the Darkest Dungeon 2 Librarian has 3 main attacks. Its Mandatory Reading attack is a single target medium damage nuke that deals mild stress damage and adds a burn stack.

Its Smokestack attack blinds one character and adds a stack of Vulnerability.

Lastly, its Categorize attack shuffles your party members, which can be somewhat annoying.

If you have Man-at-Arms or Leper, their tanking skills pretty much trivialize the encounter, provided you can take out the book stacks before the Librarian can. Apart from its special condition nukes and its non-damage Categorize ability, nothing the Darkest Dungeon 2 Librarian can do hits more than one character.

If the Darkest Dungeon 2 Librarian makes it to rank 1, it’ll heal itself for a significant amount and start using its full-party nuke multiple times per round. You want to avoid that if at all possible.

Luckily, The Librarian only has about 120 health so if you have any good damage dealers that can hit rank 4 and 3, like Highwayman, Occultist and Grave Robber, you should be able to take it down before it ever gets anywhere near the front row.

As with most Darkest Dungeon 2 bosses, if you can bring some Healing Salves or Smoke Grenades into the fight, you’ll probably have a much easier time.

Rewards – Darkest Dungeon 2 Librarian Trophies

Each of the Darkest Dungeon 2 Lair Bosses has 2 trophies they can drop at random. The Darkest Dungeon 2 Librarian boss trophies are a mixed bag. One is phenomenal and the other is mediocre.

The first of the Darkest Dungeon 2 Librarian trophies is called The Complete Catalog, and it makes your entire party inflict a 3 damage burn on enemies every time they score a critical hit.

This is a tremendous DPS increase and, unless you’re rolling a party where rooting yourself in place (such as to have a Rogue Highwayman use Point Blank Shot every round), it’s probably the best-in-slot trophy out of all the Darkest Dungeon 2 boss trophies.

The other trophy you can get from The Librarian, The Unabridged Edition, gives 100% scout chance, or, basically, a free Watchtower at the start of every biome.

It’s not bad, but it’s fairly middle of the road as far as boss trophies go. There are several other trophies you’d definitely want to equip over it.
