Stat Growths

(Lower is better)
HP: 12 MP: 16 SPD: 100 PA: 75 MA: 50

In Final Fantasy Tactics Chemist has horrible stat growths across the board, especially in physical attack power. Ideally, you don’t want to be leveling as a chemist. It doesn’t particularly matter for some characters, like Mustadio, who don’t make use of PA (or any other stats), but for most characters, leveling as a Chemist is a bad idea.

Moveset: Item

Ability NameJP Cost
Potion30
Hi-Potion200
X-Potion300
Ether300
Hi-Ether400
Elixir900
Antidote70
Eye Drops80
Echo Herbs120
Maiden’s Kiss200
Gold Needle250
Holy Water400
Remedy700
Phoenix Down90

Item is the most reliable healing in the game. It has no charge time, it’s unaffected by faith, and it heals the same amount regardless of zodiac affinity. As useful as Item is, though, you’ll only ever use the Potion skills, Phoenix Down, and maybe the occasional Remedy.

Reaction Abilities

Ability NameJP Cost
Auto-Potion400

Auto-Potion is a top tier reaction ability. It basically makes your character invincible.

The way Auto-Potion works is that it uses the weakest potion you have in your inventory, so sell all your Potions and Hi-Potions, and now every time you get hit, you’ll heal yourself for 150 HP. Against almost every enemy in the game, that’s an insurmountable defense.

Support Abilities

Ability NameJP Cost
Throw Items300
Safeguard250
Reequip0

Throw Items has its uses if you plan to use the Item moveset as a secondary moveset on a character. Otherwise everything here is forgettable. Safeguard prevents your equipment from being broken or stolen, which is extremely useful situationally (such as in the fight against Meliadoul), but 99% of the time, you’re the one breaking and stealing equipment, so it’s more useful for enemies than it is for you.

Movement Abilities

Ability NameJP Cost
Treasure Hunter100

Treasure Hunter is useless 99% of the time, but you need it towards the end of the game in order to find all the best equipment in the Deep Dungeon and at Nelveska Temple. It works counter-intuitively (you need low brave to get good equipment), so you usually want to have a character equipped specifically for this. I typically use Rapha because she starts with low brave, doesn’t need brave, and isn’t good enough for a main-party slot, but also not terrible enough to be useless.

Final Fantasy Tactics Chemist Overall Assessment

Chemist is not a good class to be in for a long time. Learn Auto-Potion and get out. You’ll need Treasure Hunter on one character, but that character absolutely should not be a Chemist (low move and low jump).

In Final Fantasy Tactics Chemists can equip guns, but if you want someone to use a gun, use Mustadio until you upgrade to Balthier. Mustadio does make a relatively good Chemist, but you should just learn all the Final Fantasy Tactics Chemist skills on him and switch him back to his original class as quickly as possible.

That about covers it for the Final Fantasy Tactics Chemist Class. Be sure to check out the Games Section for more content like this and click here for more game guides related to FFT.
