Stat Growths

(Lower is better)
HP: 9 MP: 13 SPD: 100 PA: 48 MA: 50

In Final Fantasy Tactics Monk has fantastic HP growth, but everything else is very average. You’d think his PA growth would be higher, but it’s not.

If you’re looking for a class to level up in for the growths, you’re better off with Knight (next best HP growth, top tier PA growth) or Ninja (much better PA growth, top tier speed growth).

Moveset: Martial Arts

Ability NameJP Cost
Cyclone150
Pummel300
Aurablast300
Shockwave600
Doom Fist300
Purification200
Chakra350
Revive500

Martial Arts is a great moveset for any physical character that provides a ton of utility.

It gives a decent ranged option in Aurablast, a decent heal in Chakra, the ability to remove status effects via Purification and perhaps most importantly, a weak revive skill to keep your teammates from turning into a crystal.

It doesn’t do everything exceptionally well, but it gives a character a lot of tools in their kit for situations that come up quite often.

Reaction Abilities

Ability NameJP Cost
Critical: Recover HP500
Counter300
First Strike1300

Monk boasts some pretty solid options in terms of reaction abilities. Critical: Recover HP is probably the weakest of the options, but it’s not too bad. Counter is a bread and butter Reaction Ability that’s worthwhile to stick on almost every character until something better comes along.

First Strike is very good when it works — it does an attack and cancels the incoming attack. Unfortunately, it only works against standard physical attacks from humans and nothing else. If it worked against monster attacks it’d be one of the best reaction skills in the game.

Alas, its usefulness is fairly narrow, making Shirahadori (Samurai) and Reflexes (Ninja) better in almost every situation.

Support Abilities

Ability NameJP Cost
Brawler200

Brawler allows any character to use a more powerful damage formula when attacking with fists. In essence, it makes fists among the most powerful weapons in the games in terms of pure attack power, and also boosts several of the Martial Arts skills, like Aurablast.

Sticking this Support Ability on a Ninja or sticking Dual Wield on a Monk can result in devastating physical attacks.

Movement Abilities

Ability NameJP Cost
Lifefont300

Lifefont regenerates a small amount of HP every time you move. It’s not entirely useless, but FFT tends to be a game in which a character is at full health or dead with very little in-between.

It’s possible this skill could increase the survivability of a character somewhat, but the best strategy tends to be to make very powerful characters, get in range quickly, and kill everything before you take damage, and Lifefont doesn’t provide much help on that front.

Final Fantasy Tactics Monk Overall Assessment

Martial Arts is an OK moveset that provides a lot of general utility, and Final Fantasy Tactics Monks offer some good Reaction Abilities. What makes Final Fantasy Tactics Monks good, though, is being a monk. Actually being in the class itself.

In Final Fantasy Tactics Monks get good multipliers for Attack, HP and Speed (multipliers, not stat growths), and they get Brawler passively. If you stick Dual Wield on a Monk, it will kill pretty much any enemy in the game in a single standard attack and make short work of bosses.

That about covers it for the Final Fantasy Tactics Monk Class. Be sure to check out the Games Section for more content like this and click here for more game guides related to FFT.
